Johannes "Hans" Meyer (1945 – 2018)

Brief overview:

Hans (73), together with his family were watching TV on Friday night, 16 February 2018, at approximately 22:30, when suddenly three armed men stormed into their house through the door. They demanded keys to the safe and took the elderly man to the bedroom where the safe was located, they then made Mr Meyer sit down on the couch before shooting him twice in the chest.

  • Tshepo Joseph Molefe broke into the Meyers’ house on the farm Vögelvlei on 7 February 2018, a week prior to the murder and stole a laptop and television.

  • The suspects opened the safe, took three firearms, a .287 magnum revolver, a .306 hunting rifle a .303 rifle as well as other items such as jewellery, a TV set and an undisclosed amount of cash. They then fled the scene using the family's new white Ford Ranger which was parked outside.

  • Six suspects aged between 35 and 39, including a woman were arrested. The suspects were traced and nabbed at their different hideouts in Embalenhle and Emzinoni respectively after police acted swiftly on information received regarding their whereabouts.
  • During the arrest, the five men were found in possession of some of the items that were robbed from the victims including a TV set, hand guns, a rifle and ammunition at Embalenhle while the woman was found at Emzinoni in possession of the cellphone of the victim. The vehicle of the family that was used by the suspects to flee the scene was found burnt also at Emzinoni.

  • The suspects are due to appear at the Evander Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 20 February 2018, and are facing charges of murder, house robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of stolen property.
  • Tshepo Molefe was sentenced to a life sentence by the Delmas High Court in May 2018 for the murder.
  • Molefe, the convicted farm attacker and killer was sentenced to an additional eight years’ imprisonment on Wednesday 18th March for breaking into Mr Hans Meyer’s house a week prior to killing him in 2018.
