He was admitted to practice at the bar in 1830. At the time of his death he was the father of the Side Bar of the Supreme Court of the Cape Colony.

He was interred in the Family Vault of the Overbeeks in the Somerset Road Dutch Reformed Cemetery but subsequently removed to the new Redelinghuys Vault in Mowbray Cemetery (6th June 1887). Plots 117 and 118B.
