Biography Youth and Pre-War John Alderman Sr. was born in 1742 in Deerfield, Cumberland County, New Jersey Colony. His parents were Daniel Alderman and Abigail Harris. [1] He was the eldest of the three sons of Daniel Alderman who came to Duplin County in 1755. [2]

Duplin County was formed from New Hanover County in 1749. Settlers were flocking to the new county from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the colonies of the north Atlantic seaboard. [3] Page 41.

On October 28, 1765, John Alderman secured from Governor Tryon a grant for 300 acres of land on Doctor's Creek in Duplin County. To this he added more by purchase until his land consisted of 700 acres. He built a water mill on Doctor's Creek. [3] Page 56..

He married Mary Cashwell in 1770 at Duplin, North Carolina Colony. [2]

Revolutionary War During the American Revolutionary War, he was a soldier of the line in the 1st North Carolina Regiment commanded by Colonel Thomas Clark. [2]

The Roster of soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution labeled as Pierce's Register from the Seventeenth Report of the National Society of the Daughters American Revolution, lists John Alderman with identity number of 90604. [4] He is listed in a related document, Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia, which quotes the previous citation and expands upon the detail. [5]

Children John Alderman, Sr., and Mary Cashwell became the parents of six children. [5] They were:

  • Mary, born 1771, wed Joshua
  • Christian, born 1773, wed Reuben Rogers
  • James, born 1775, never married
  • Elizabeth, born 1778, wed Isaac Newton
  • John, born 1780, wed Nancy Ann Newton
  • Keziah, born 1782, wed Joshua Blanton [3] Page 44.

Final Years

On 18 November, 1802, John Alderman obtained a land grant for 180 acres in Duplin, North Carolina. [6]

In the1810 U.S. Federal Census of Duplin, North Carolina, the head of household is John Alderman. Household concists of one male over 45, one female over 45, 1 female 26-44 and 1 female under 10. [7]

He passed away in 1822. He was buried in Wallace, Duplin County, North Carolina, USA. [1] Mrs. Ann Newton, his granddaughter, when about eighty-five years of age, wrote of him: "When I was a girl, grandfather was about eighty years old, but I remember him well. He read a great deal, especially the Bible; often while reading the tears would ren down his cheeks. On the day he was buried his beloved wife, Mary, his companion for fifty-two years, said, 'If ever there was a lover of the Lord, surely he was one.' [3] Page 56.
