About John Allyn
Son Matthew Allinge's three children -- John, Thomas and Mary -- each received twenty shillings in the will of Richard Allen the elder of Braunton, Devon, England dated 29 November 1647.
He appeared on the list of freemen in 1669: "A list of freemen of Hartford on the North the River, Taken October 13, 1669 ... Left. Jno. Allyn".
On 30 January 1670 John received house and lands at Windsor by deed of gift from his father at his marriage, and the gift was confirmed in Matthew's will dated 30 January 1670. In that will, he also received lands at Kenilworth in New London county and lands at Ketch.
John was cornet of troop 1657/1658 and rose from Lieutenant to Colonel. He served as town clerk of Hartford 1659/1696; deputy 1661; magistrate 1662; was secretary of the Colony of Connecticut 1663-1665 and 1667-1695, and served on the Council under Sir Edmund Andros in 1687. John wrote an extensive account of the troubles preceeding and during the Pequot War; Increase Mather included 19 pages by John Allen in his Relation of Indian Wars.
Inventory of the estate of Col. John Allyn of Hartford was taken 12 November 1696 by Cyprian Nickols, Thomas Bunce & Joseph Easton. The inventory amounted to L1806-13-10 and included: "Two Negroes: A Man and Woman, in Cash, L45, a bill due from Robert Lane L145, a tankard, candle cup, salt seller, dram cup, a large spoon, a Ditto (broken)." The inventory in cash & plate amounted to L206-15s-06d. Distribution was recorded 23 November 1696, giving 1/3 of the real estate to the relict during life, and distribution to each of the five children: "To the Widow of Col. John Allyn, To William Whiting, To William Southmayd, To Aaron Cooke, to Elizabeth Allyn; by Thomas Bunce & William Pitkin. The distribution report is dated 4 March 1696/1697.
John married (1) Ann Smith; John and Ann had six children. He married (2) Hannah Lamberton; John and Hannah had no children.
