John Avery was the son of John Avery (b. 14 may 1706 Groton, New London Co., CT (d. 16 Jan 1766 Franklin, New London Co., CT) and Lydia Smith (ca1813-1766). John Avery married Mehitable Buell, daughter of Lt. Abel Buell, Jr. and Mehitable Dewey and they at least had 9 known children together.

John Avery served as corporal in Ebenezer Leech's co., 1755; in Capt. Billing's co., as sergeant, 1757 (French and Indian War Rolls.). He was undoubtedly in the Revolution. One of his letters, dated Aug. 12, 1775, and now in the possession of a descendant, states that Gov. Turnbull had received work from Gen. Washington to stop the troops and recruiting officers on the road and that he, John Avery, feared that he would have to disband the company that he had raised; that he had written to Col. Sargeant on the matter; that he was ready to join the regiment or go to New London. A reference to the records shows that such an order was given, Aug. 9, 1775 (Harriet L. Eames, Bridgeport.).
