John Avery, Jr.
A Patriot of the American Revolution for MASSACHUSETTS. DAR Ancestor # A003985
John Avery Jr., was part of a group of Patriots called “The Loyal Nine” (the innermost circle of the Sons of Liberty) who opposed Timothy Ruggles and all Loyalists John Avery, Jr. was a close relation of the murder victim, Joshua Spooner, of Joshua's Well. John signed the death warrant for Bathheba Ruggles Spooner.
John Avery, Jr. (September 2, 1739 – June 7, 1806) was an American politician who served as the 1st Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. He served from January 1, 1780-June 7, 1806.
Avery had served as Deputy Secretary of the Province of Massachusetts Bay under Samuel Adams. Avery defeated Adams at the polls to be the first Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.
