Mary (alias Polley), the eldest daughter of John Avery Jr. and Mary Cushing was born on 21 April 1770 at Boston, Massachusetts. For 30 years following the Revolution, her father served as Secretary of State of Massachusetts.

Mary married Luke Baldwin, the son of Colonel Jeduthan Baldwin and Lucy Parkman on 8 September 1789 at Brookfield, Massachusetts. They had twelve children. (see below)
