About John Bass, Jr.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bass-110

John, son of John Bass and Love Harris, was born about 1700 in Nansemond County, Virginia Colony. Although his parents married in North Carolina, they returned to live in Virginia for several years. They were still living there in 1701 and moved to North Carolina by 1719.

Many researches list Moses Bass as second son of John and Love Bass. For reasons explained on his profile he appears to have been much younger. John, Jr. appears to have been second son. He was named as co-executor with his brother Edward Bass in his father's will. By 1722 he had already started to purchase land in North Carolina indicating a birth year about 1700. By the time of his father's death in 1732, John Jr. had acquired, by purchase or grant, over 700 acres of land. Which may explain why he was left no land by his father, only his "old square Mousled gun." From his brother, Edward,, a land purchase was made of land next to Thomas Bryant (of Aquia Stafford Co Bryants), Richard Washington, John Williams, William Bennet and Cullen Pollock.

John Bass, Jr. was born on February 20, 1706 in Bertie, North Carolina.

His parents were John Bass, Sr. and Love (Harris) Bass.

If John Bass married Kitty Jordan, she was his first wife. John was married to Elizabeth (Winborne?) from at least 1748 (see document below) to 1777 (his death--he names wife Elizabeth in his will). His wife's identity has not been documented beyond the name Elizabeth, but the following record suggests she was a Winborn: Deed Book 1 page 343 John married Elizabeth Winborn on 18 January 1732 in Bertie County, North Carolina (Northampton County in 1741). [citation needed] Children named in John's will: Jacob, John, Abraham, Issac, Jethro, Drury Bass, and Alse Earp, Undin Council and Elizabeth Brittle. Some also add a son Thomas, although no Thomas is named in John's will.

4 March 1748 John Bass and Elizabeth Bass of Northampton County planter to William Winborn of Nansemond County, Virginia planter 60 pounds current Virginia money for 150 acres on the north side of Roanoke river in Urahaw Swamp joining Matthew Thomas, Edward Earp, and a branch part of a patent to Henry Sims for 360 acres granted May 01,1719, all houses, buildings, stables, orchards, pastures, fences, etc. Wit: Thomas Flanner, James Osborne, Jacob Bass. Reg: Northampton County May 1748 * This was part of a patent granted to Henry Sims. It's possible that William was Elizabeth's brother or uncle. William's 1748 will does not mention Elizabeth, so William Winborne c1680 - 1748 is most likely not her father. More research is needed. John Bass, Sr. who married Love Harris was Haplogroup A-M31, according to the DNA results of many descendants. Descendants of his alleged grandfather, John Basse who married Elizabeth the Nansemond, are Haplogroup R1b. These haplogroups are not even remotely related.

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/BASS/default.aspx?section=yres...

However, (as of 2018), descendants of John Bass b. 1673 are accepted for membership by the Nansemond Nation if they can prove their line of descent from John using primary source evidence (not DNA). (This line was previously ineligible for membership.)

It may be that someone from our line was adopted by someone from Nathaniel Basse's line, or that William or John were fathered by a non-Bass male.

Most researchers do not believe that this line is descended from Edward Basse and Mary Tucker, as proposed by researchers Dowd and Sylvestri.

Bass researcher Al Bass made this comment in an email to Margot Woodrough:

"I am 100% convinced that John Bayes was not the father of the John Bass who married Love Harris. I am 98% convinced that John Bayes was not even closely related to said John Bass.

I know it is not interesting reading, and I know that my John Bass of Virginia does not PROVE that John Bass was the son of William Basse, but it does demonstrate that all of the documentary evidence is consistent with same, and that there is not a shred of evidence that is consistent with the contrary contention that John Bass was a son of John Bayes." http://margotwoodrough.com/p16.htm
