Biography
John was a leatherseller and merchant tailor in London. He completed his apprenticeship as a leatherseller about 1546-7. The Registry of Freemen, City of London, Henry VIII to Edward VI says:
”John Broke, s. of [ ] Broke, Citizen and Marchanttailor, Apprentice of William [ ], Citizen and Letherseller, served with same, Wit.: the same William in the presence of Thomas Kightley, Warden. Admitted 10 [month missing] year aforesaid". John's will reads: "I John Brooke Citizen and Leatherseller of London ... directs that he be buried at St. Leonard Eastcheape in London if he died in the city of London; if not, 'to be buried where yt shall please god'. He divided his estate into thirds, following the usual practice of London trademen of this period. One third went to Elizabeth his wife; one third to the living children; one third for gifts and legacies specified, which included L100 to Elizabeth. Parcels of land called Alkens Lande conteyninge Fower Crofts, and Wardens, in the parish of Childerditche in Essex. To sonne William Broke Letherseller, my Messuage or Tenemente with shoppes, cellers, sollers [lofts], warehouses, yardes, lightes, easements, comodities and hereditaments with thappurtenaunces. Overseers were son-in-law Robert Foote, Cittizen and Fishemonger of London, and son William Brooke."
No record of burial appears in the St. Leonard's (London) registers, but he may have died elsewhere and been buried in another parish. The will was probated 8 July 1584.
