JOHN CHENOWETH III 1735-1812

Born in Baltimore Co., MD, John Chenoweth III, the second child of John and Mary Smith Chenoweth came to Virginia with his parents at an early age. John married twice, first in the late 1750s to a Mary, and second to Eleanor Parke.

As the dates of the death of Mary and the second marriage are unknown, the division of the children by mother is not known precisely known. Applications by his descendants for DAR status claim the marriage to Eleanor took place in 1761. If correctly interpreted, a recent discovery of a provision John's will, could mean that Mary was daughter of William Smith and that the one child of this marriage was the first son William. This provision left a special legacy to William from his grandfather William Smith. This would mean that both John II and his son John III married wives named Mary Smith.

Several researchers in this line currently think that Eleanor, the 2nd wife, may have been the daughter of Roger Parke and Hannah Arnold. It is not known where either marriage took place but it is thought that all John's children were born in Hampshire County, Virginia (organized from Frederick County in 1754). John had received land located in Hampshire Co. from his father upon his death, as did his brother William. William sold his share of the 248 acre division to John within that same year. John is known to have acquired other lands and held property totaling 792 acres at his death.

John died in Hampshire Co. at the age of 76. John's family and his land are known by his will, prepared on April 19, 1811, and probated in Hampshire County after his death in 1812. Elias, the youngest son, and John Monroe were executors. Unlike many other Chenoweth wills, John designated that all his personal property and land be sold. These monies were to be evenly distributed. The sale of the land may have been the impetus to move west as all John's children left Virginia. William would go to Warren Co., OH. The son, John, Jr., settled in Washington County, Indiana in 1807. Absolom, James and Elias went to Perry Co., OH, the three Ashbrook sisters, Mary, Rachel and Eleanor went to Kentucky, and it is believed that Elizabeth's Monroes went to Illinois.
