

In 1745, John Coffey and wife. Jane Coffey, of Spotsylvania County sold 100 (of 200) acres of land in Essex County, Parish of St Anne. The other 100 acres was sold in 1747. On March 9, 1758, John Coffey sold 124 acres on the Hardware River in Albemarle County to James Coffey for 30 pounds. John and Jean Coffey sell 139 acres on Hardware River to Robert Baker for 142L, 13s,4p. 1774, John Coffey agrees with son Benjamin to make improvements of Benjamin Cofey's property amountingto 35L. In return, John and Jane may live there until they die at which time, Benjamin will pay 35 pouds to heirs. John Coffey wills estate to wife Jean Coffey until her death, then divided among Thomas, John, Edmond, Rubin & Benjamin Coffey, Winifred Moran & Betty Field. Thomas Coffey & Bejamin Coffey executors. Probated at Albemarle Court 1775. Thomas Jefferson Coffey was the son of McCaleb and Elizabeth (Collette) Coffey. He was born in Caldwell County, N.C. near the town of Patterson. He taught school in Valle Crucis before the Civil War. When the war started, he enlisted in Company E of the 58th North Carolina Infantry. He ended his service as a Captain. After the war he was instrumental in building the highway between Blowing Rock and Boone, N.C. He got a charter through the state legislature and along with his brother William Columbus Coffey he got the contract to build the road. The construction began in August of 1893 and was completed in October of 1894. Thomas Coffey and his wife Mary (Mollie) Greer were the parents of three children. Elizabeth who married Judge W. B. Councill, Margaret who married Stacy Rambo and Stewart who married Miss Sanborn and later Mrs. Roby.
