Thomas B Coffey, Sr

"Thomas Coffey, son of John Coffey, was born in Essex County, VA, on March 7, 1742. He was married (1st), about 1762, in Albemarle County, VA, to ELIZABETH SMITH. She was the daughter of THOMAS SMITH, SR., whose will was probate in Albemarle County in 1783. Thomas Coffey and Elizabeth Smith had six children: A. Betsy Coffey; married David Allen. B. John Coffey; married Hannah Wilson. C. Thomas Coffey; married Nancy Pendley. D. James Coffey; married Delilah Ferguson. E. Polly Coffey; married William Coffey. F. SMITH COFFEY. Elizabeth [Smith] Coffey died shortly after 1776 and Thomas Coffey married (2nd) Sarah Fields. They then removed to Wilkes County, NC, where six other children were born: G. Martha Coffey; married James Dowell. H. William Coffey; married Annie Boone [sister of Hannah Boone, who married his half-brother, Smith Coffey.] I. Reuben Coffey; married Polly Dowell. J. Elijah Coffey; married Polly Hull. K. Sally Coffey; married Samuel Stewart. L. Jesse Coffey; died young. According to the Last Will and Testament of John Coffey, Thomas along with his siblings John, Edmond, Winifred, Reuben, Benjamin and Elizabeth inherited their father’s estate after the death of their mother, Jane Graves Coffey. The two eldest sons, James and William inherited five sterling shillings each. Thomas and his brother, Benjamin were the executors of the will which was executed in March of 1775. According to the book, "Thomas Coffey and His Descendants", Thomas Coffey moved from Virginia to Wilkes County, North Carolina (present day Caldwell County) after his marriage to his second wife, Sarah Fields sometime between 1775 and 1780. He and his family were members of the Yadkin Grove Baptist Church which was built on the Coffey plantation on the east bank of the Yadkin River.
