Biography

John Collins, Jr. was born on 6 May 1640 in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony to John “the shoemaker” Collins, Sr. 1606-1670 of Boston and Susannah (Colburn) Collins 1620-1670. He came to Guilford in 1667 ; he was admitted a freeman in 1670 ; and went to Branford, where he died in.1704.

John married 1st, Mary Trowbridge 1642-1668 on 2 Jun 1662 in Boston, MA. They had three children and the family moved to Branford, Connecticut in 1668 and Mary died the following year. Following Mary's death he married 2nd Mary Stevens 1625-1700, widow of Henry Kingsworth of Guilford on June 2, 1669 in Guilford, Connecticut. She was the daughter of John Stevens and the widow of Henry Kingsworth. John and the second Mary had no known children. In 1671, the family moved to Guilford, Connecticut, where this Mary died about 1698.
John Married his 3rd wife on March 6, 1699 in Branford, Connecticut. Dorcas Swain 1657-1724, widow Taintor. She was the daughter of Samuel Swain and widow of John Tainter. She married, as her second husband, William Wheeler, and died May, 1734.

Probably born in Braintree. Like his father, he was a shoemaker and tanner. In 1663 with two of his cousins, sons of Edward Collins of Cambridge, he removed to Middletown, Conn. Thence he went to Saybrook, same colony, and was soon after in Branford, where he signed the New Plantation Covenant of Branford. John Collins was in Guilford in 1682 and was appointed in that year to teach the grammar school for a trial term of one-quarter. He continued several years in that position. John was admitted a freeman in 1670 ; and went to Branford, where he died in 1704.

Although this person was likely interred in Guilford's original village cemetery (now the commons and public park in downtown Guilford), no surviving gravestone was known in 1818 when all gravestones at the Village Green, but not the people's remains, were dispersed to other town cemeteries.

John Collins was located in Massachusetts Bay colony as early as 1640, in which year he had a grant of land in Braintree, representing a family of three heads. He was an active citizen of Boston, was admitted to the church there April 4, 1646, and subscribed to the freeman's oath in that place May 6 following. He was a shoemaker and tanner by occupation. He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. He died at Boston, March 21, 1670. He had a wife, Susannah, and children: John, Susannah, Thomas and Elizabeth. The elder daughter became the wife of Thomas Walker, of Boston
