Notes

  • John (born 22 march 1682) quitclaimed to his brother Samuel in 1705 (with consent by Jeffery Champlin Esq. guardian of Samuel) 1/3 of a farm in Kingston between 80 and 90 acres in triangular shape.
  •  December 3, 1709 John Cottrell quitclaimed 1/3 of said farm to his brother Nathaniel Cottrell. This farm was west of Slocunaville in territory taken from North Kingston in 1742 when Exeter was set off from North Kingston (Bates Vol 8, page 72).
  • "Newport Church Record, October 1, 1693" Brother Joseph Crandall and Brother John Maxson, Jr. were appointed by the Sabbatarian Church as messengers to signify to John Cottrell that they have taken notice of his neglect in meeting with the congragation, and so therefore exhort him to discharge his duty therein; and received answer that it was an account of difference between him and Brother Clarke. The church met October 25 and issue the difference Sept 23, 1694 -- the Sabbatarian Church met a Westerly and issued the difference between Brother Cottrell and Bro. Clarke, and likewise between Bro. Cottrell and Bro. Gibson.
  • Sept 12, 1697 the church met to consider of a result concerning Bro John Cottrells disorders in neglecting his assemblying with the church and refusing the hear the church notwithstanding several admonitions but the matter was suspended until Sept 17, 1798 when the following was entered by the records of the church, "whereas John Cottrell having for some time stood as a brother in the congregation and having for a long time neglected his duties in the church, although having been often by appointed messengers of the church admonished for the same, and he still persisting in his neglect, and having withdrawn his communion from us, the church to take themselves discharged from their watch and care over him.   • Additionally:  "Please let me add to the story. My husband, Lyle, is a direct descendant of this John Cottrell. John Cottrell, grandson of Nicholas, son of John. John's first wife was Mary Anrold, daughter of Oliver and Phebe Cook Arnold of Jamestown, RI on Feb. 1, 1708/1709. She died aged 22. They had one daughter Phebe.

John second wife was widow Elizabeth Gardiner, married Sept. 5, 1712. She had one daughter, Elizabeth Gardiner by her first husband, All of John's children were by Elizabeth except Phebe. His will was proven April 1721. Executors were son John and wife Elizabeth. Overseer was Nicholas Cottrell (nephew) of Westerly. John quitclaimed to his brother Samuel in 1705,( with consent of Jeffrey Champlin, Esq., -- guardian of said Samuel) 1/3 of a farm in Kingston between 80 and 90 acres, in traingular shape. Dec. 3, 1709, John Cottrell quitclaimed 1/3 of said farm to his brother Nathaniel. This farm was west of Slocumville in territory taken from North Kingston in 1742 when Exeter was set off from North Kingston. (Bates Notes, Vol. 8, page 72).

John's widow, for her third husband, married William Tanner in 1722.
