Biography

Elizabeth _____ Gardiner Cottrell Tanner [1] was born about 1688 in Hopkinton, Kings, Rhode Island; her parents, date of birth, and place of birth are all unknown, but there are hints in the primary records that her maiden name may also have been Gardiner.
Elizabeth was probably married 3 times. 1st marriage to George Gardiner, 2nd to John Cottrell Sr. Sept 5, 1712., and then to William Tanner in 1722.
Children of George Gardiner and Elizabeth
- Elizabeth Gardiner m. John Bentley
Children of John Cottrell, Sr. and Elizabeth ____ Gardiner
- John III m. Elizabeth Gardiner. John is almost certainly a stepson to Elizabeth as her husband John Sr named Elizabeth and his son John Jr. as co-executors in in 1721 Will. This means John Jr would have been about 21 in 1721, hence born prior to the marriage of John Cottrell Sr to Mary circa 1710.
- Mary Cottrell m. Nathan Tanner. The best available evidence suggests that it is highly probable that Mary Cottrell was the daughter of John Cottrell and Mary Arnold.
- Hannah Cottrell m. Joshua Clark.
Children of William Tanner and Elizabeth ____ Gardiner Cottrell
- None Known.
Elizabeth (Unknown) Tanner is mentioned in the 15 Mar 1752 last will and testament of her stepson and son-in-law Nathan Tanner, clearly establishing that Elizabeth was alive when his will was written, so it may be known that she died sometime after 15 Mar 1752. [2]
