About John Cottrell, I

Family

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cottrell-10

John Cottrell was born about 1650, [1] or 1652 [2] in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He is the son of Nicholas Cottrell and an unknown wife.

John is thought by some to have married firstly Elizabeth/Penelope, but this marriage is doubtful. The John Cottrell in the transcribed marriage record is shown to have died in 1721, which is the death date of John's son John Cottrell II, and the record itself is unsure whether his wife's given name is Elizabeth or Penelope, showing her name as Elizabeth/Penelope (?). [3]

John Cottrell & Elizabeth/Penelope, Marriage
John might have married secondly Hannah Gaylord Crandall, though her identity is also uncertain. John's son-in-law's mother was also called Hannah (Gaylord) Crandall.

"John Crandall mentioned in his father's will was of Westerly and Kingston, Rhode Island. He owned the land in Kingston in 1680 which was laid out by Rev. John Crandall. His first wife's name is not known. His second wife might be Hannah Gaylord Crandall. If this is so, it might explain how he came in possession of the Crandall land." [4] John had the following known children:

  1. Hannah (Cottrell) Utter;
  2. John Cottrell II;
  3. Samuel Cottrell;
  4. Nathaniel Cottrell;
  5. Mary (Cottrell) Crandall [5]

John Cottrell was named as son and heir in Nicholas Cottrell's Will probated in February 1680 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay.

"Last will and testament of Nicholas Cottrell, Sen., living by Taunton River, taken Feb. 1680, as followeth: … I give and bequeath unto my son John Cottrell, one hundred acres of land which he now liveth upon, at Skonomicutt by Narragansett. ..." [6] John Cottrell "died in early 1704, leaving a Will, of which his son John Cottrell II was Executor". [7]

Find A Grave states that John Cottrell died in 1721, but this is the death year of his son, also called John Cottrell. Perhaps Find A Grave has conflated their identities. [8]

Biography

John Cottrell, mentioned in his father Nicholas' will, was of Westerly and Kingston, Rhode Island. He owned the land in Kingston in 1681 which was laid out to Rev. John Crandall. His wife's name is not known. John may have been married secondly to Hannah Gaylord Crandall, which may explain how he came into possession of the Crandall land.

This is the John Cottrell who is mentioned in the Newport Church Record as having neglected his duties and separated off from the church on Oct. 1, 1693, Oct. 5, 1693, again on Sept. 17, 1698. He died early in 1704 leaving a will. The executor of his will was his son John. John Crandall and John Maxson were chosen as messengers to deliver reprimands from the Sabbatarian Church in Newport. His will was destroyed in a fire in 1869.
