Biography

: John was born about 1643 in Hartford, Connecticut. It was a new town, established in October 1635 by twenty-five Adventurers, one of whichwas John's father, Robert Day. The first winter, the Adventurers lived in dugouts. (Read here for a description of those dugouts.) : The following June, Rev. Thomas Hooker arrived from Cambridge with the main body of the church - about a hundred men, women and children, with all their horses, cattle, pigs, and chickens. Hartford is on the banks of the great Connecticut River, and they sent a ship of suppliesfrom Boston around Cape Cod, and up the river to meet them at Hartford. Although the settlement was carefully planned, the early years were full of hardship, and sometimes food was scarce. : John was the youngest of four children born to Robert Day and Editha Stebbins. His older siblings were Thomas Day, Sarah Day, and Mary Day. John's uncle, Edward Stebbins lived just six houses awaywith his wife and children. : When John was perhaps about three yeas old, his father Robert Day grew sick and died. John's mother Editha Stebbins Day soon married a neighboring bachelor, John Maynard.<ref name="Marriages">U.S., New England Marriages Prior to 1700 database, Ancestry.com, (accessed 25 Oct 2013), entries for John Maynard: marriage 1648; death 1658; citing original data: Torry, Clarence A. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2004.</ref> In the small, isolated community of Hartford, it required a man's strength to plough the fields and hunt the wild game which kept the families well-fed through the winter. The women were fully occupied with cooking and preserving the food, and with spinning linen and wool. : When John was about thirteen years old, his beloved step-father, John Maynard, grew sick, and died by February 1658. John's sister Sarah married a Hartford man, Nathaniel Gunn in November of thatyear. John's mother Editha married a widower with six children, Elizur Holyoke, and moved to Eilzur's home in Springfield, about twenty-seven miles away. John's brother Thomas and his other sister, Mary, moved to Springfield with their mother Editha.<ref>A genealogical register of the descendants in the male line of Robert Day, of Hartford, Conn., who died in the year 1648, database, Internet Archive: (accessed 24 Oct 2013), extracted from George Edward Day, book of the same name (Northampton, Massachusetts, J. & L. Metcalf, 1848), page 7-10.</ref> : John Maynard left most of his property to John Day, after Editha haduse of it. John Day is not mentioned with his siblings who moved to Springfield, so we are left to assume that he stayed in Hartford to look after the three houses and the fields he inherited. Since he was notyet an adult, he may have stayed with his uncle Edward Stebbins. We do not know, but may speculate on what might have been a rational outcome.

Marriages and children

: John married first, perhaps by 1670, Mary, last name unknown (Gaylord?). They may have had three sons and two daughter before she died. : John Day married second, probably by 1684, Sarah Butler, daughter ofThomas Butler of Hartford. <ref name="Families">Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, database, Ancestry.com, extracted from Lucius Barnes Barbour, Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, (Baltimore, Maryland, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1977, Surnames, A-B, page 135, 210. </ref> : Sarah is believed to be the mother of John Day's three youngest sons, and a daughter.<ref name ="Hale">Hale, House and Related Families: Mainly of the Connecticut River Valley,,database, FamilySearch.org: (accessed 13 Nov 2013), entry for Edward Holyoke, extracted from Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, book of the same name (Baltimore, Massachusetts: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1978), page 511-512, footnote m.</ref>

: John Day passed away about 1730.

Will of John Day

November 16, 1725.
In the name of God, Amen. I, John Day of Hartford, being advanced in years and weak in body, not knowing the day of my death, and being willing to set my house in order, I do ordain and make this to be my last will and testament, hereby making void all former wills by me made or declared. Impri. I give my soule to God who I hope hath redeemed it by the precious blood of his Son, Jesus Christ. Item. After my debts and funeral charges are discharged out of my moveable estate, I give to my loving wife two cows, with a third part of the remainder of my moveable estate, as also all my right in the mill, and after her decease, I give it to my son William and his heirs: Item. I give to my son John Day forty shillings to be paid out of my [wearing or weaving.]--I do confirm to my several sons the deeds of gift I have formerly made to them, of my lands to them and their heirs. Item. I give to my son William and to his heirs my three acre lot in the Long meadow. I give to my son Joseph my teame, with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging. Item. All the rest of my moveable estate not before given, I give to my daughters equally to be divided among them, only my daughter Sarah shall have the value of four pounds more than either of her sisters. And I do hereby nominate and appoint my loving wife Sarah to be sole Executrix of this my last Will. It being before omitted, I add, I give tomy wife the use of half my house during her widowhood, and half the cellar, the housing to be on the south part. Note <ref name="Hale"/> ====: Some books say John Day married Sarah Maynard. This was an erroneousassumption on the part of the authors, as they had only a first name,Sarah, and they assumed from John Day's large inheritance from John Maynard that Maynard was John Day's father-in-law.

: John Maynard was a bachelor who married the widow Editha Day and raised her four children. The youngest one, John Day, named his son Maynard Day (another reason the writers assumed John Maynard was John Day'sfather-in-law). The strong ties between John Day and John Maynard were those of a son to his step-father; John Maynard died without having any children.<ref name="Hale"/>
