Biography

Thomas Day was the son of Robert Day (1604 - 1648), born about 1636 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony. Sometime after 1658 he moved to Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony with his mother Editha at the time of her marriage to Elizur Holyoke. He acquired six half siblings with his mothers marriage, children from Elizur's first marriage with Mary Pynchon (see Early Springfield, MA section for more on Elizur).

Thomas married 27 October 1659 in Springfield, MA, Sarah Cooper, born in 1619, died October 27, 1675. She was the daughter of Thomas Cooper, a lieutenant and commanded Brookfield, MA, forces who was killed when Indians burned Springfield, Massachusetts. Mrs. Day died November 21, 1726. [12]. Lt. Thomas Cooper was on the first Springfield Board of Selectmen in 1644 and he was the Springfield Representative to the Massachusetts General Court in 1668.

According to Springfield records Thomas Day arrived Springfield 1658, resided in Springfield 53 years until his death on December 27, 1711. He was appointed in 1700, with Luke Hitchcock, as fence viewer on the South side of the Aguam. After having ten children with his wife Sarah, she died on Nov. 21, 1726. They had ten children:

  1. Thomas was born on March 23, 1662, married Elizabeth Merrick on Jan. 28, 1685. In 1700 they moved to Colchester, CT where he died on Jan. 14, 1729. She died on Dec. 28, 1743. They had 8 children: Elizabeth (1687-), Thomas (1689-), Sarah (1691-), Ebenezer (1694-), Jonathan (1697-1721), Deborah (1699-), Nathan (1701-), Samuel (1704-).
  2. Sarah was born on June 14, 1664, married John Burr on Feb. 21, 1683.
  3. Mary was born on Dec. 15, 1666, married John Merrick on Feb. 11, 1687. John was on the Springfield Board of Selectmen in 1705, 1707, and 1709.
  4. John was born on Feb. 20, 1669 and died on Aug. 6, 1670.
  5. Samuel was born on May 20, 1671, married Mary Dumberton on July 22, 1697. He was a Selectman in 1717 and 1719 and Rep. to the Mass General Court in 1726-1729. Samuel died on Oct. 19, 1729 in Springfield and she died on May 17, 1759. They had 8 children: Samuel (1698-), Josiah (1701-), Mary (1703), Lydia (1706-), Thomas (1708-), Mary (1711-), Abigail (1713-), Aaron (1715-).
  6. John was born on Sept. 29, 1673, married Mary Smith on Mar. 10, 1697, they had 10 children: John (1698-), Hezekiah (1700-), Joseph (1703-), Mary (1706-), Sarah (1708-) Benjamin (1710-), Rebecca (1713-), William (1715-), Elizabeth (1718-), Thankful (1721-). He later married the widow Hannah Kent.*
  7. Ebenezer was born on Feb. 18, 1676 and died on June 12, 1676.
  8. Ebenezer was born on Sept. 5, 1677 and died on Sept. 1, 1763 in Springfield. He married Mercy Hitchcock on April 18, 1700 and they had 11 children: Ebenezer (1701-), Mercy (1703-), Luke (1706-), Sarah (1709-), Thankful (1711-), Editha (1715-), Miriam (1718-), Timothy* (1720-), Caleb* (1723-), Eleanor* (1725-).
  9. Jonathan was born on Aug. 8, 1680, married Mercy Burt on Dec. 2, 1709 died July 10, 1712. In 1703 he was chosen, with Thomas Bliss and Lamb Colley, to be “Surveiors of the high waves.” His widow married John Moore of Kingstown, MA. Jonathan and Mercy had two children: Mercy (1710-), Jonathan (1712-).
  10. Abigail was born in 1683 and married Samuel Warner on Feb. 18, 1703. She then married Thomas Miller in 1726. She died on Oct. 6, 1747. [11]

Last Will & Testament

...1st. I do give unto Sarah my well-beloved wife, in case she survive and outlive me, the improvement of all my whole estate both land and movables to be for her comfort and maintainance so long as she shall continue in the estate of widowhood and bear my name, together alsoe with all the income of my estate in my son Johnathan's hand, that so she may be comfortably provided for. And further I do give unto my beloved wife aforesaid one third part of the moveable estate to be at her own dispose, according as she shall see convenient.

2dly. I do give unto my son Thomas Day all my woolen wearing Clothes after my decease together with my best Hatt.

3dly. I do give unto my son Samuel Day my lower lot in the Neck over the Great River, containing two acres more or less and alsoe one third of my land in the piece called Ashquenunseck Neck over the Great Riveraforesaid: moreover one fourth part of the Meadow called the World's End, the whole being ten acres.

4thly. I do give to my son John Day my upper lot in ye Neck containingtwo acres more or less and one third part of my land in Asquenunseck aforesaid, the whole being twenty three acres and also one fourth partof my land at the place called the World's Ends aforesaid.

5thly. I do give unto my son Ebenezer Day three acres and a half of land in the plain above End Brook, being the whole of my land in that place: and alsoe four acres of land lying upon the hill between the lands of James Warriner, Jun. and William Warriner; only provided that if my son Jonathan Day see cause to pay unto my son Ebenezer Day nine pounds cash within the space of two years after the decease of myself or wife which shall last happen that then the aboves'd four acres of landon the hill part shall be his. Further, I do give unto my son Ebenezer one third part of my land in Asquenunseck Neck, he having his choicewhich side of the lot to take the land; and also one fourth part of my land at the World's End Meadow.

6thly. I do give to my son Jonathan Day six acres of land lying on theback side of my pasture on Garden Brook and one fourth of my land at ye World's End, he having his choice which side of the land to take it, and alsoe all my rights in the Outward Commons.

7thly. I do give unto my three daughters, Sarah Burt, Mary Mirick and Abigail Warriner, that is to say to each daughter particulary the sum of nine pounds apiece as money to be paid out of the moveables if it hold out so much and what overplus ther may happen to be in the moveables more than pay the daughters their respective portions, to be equally divided among all my children. It is to be understood that all the improveable lands in my estate by my son Jonahtan according to covenantand agreement with him so long as either myself or wife shall continue and then the will to take place.

And further what moneys shall happen to be in the house at my deceease, I give unto my well-beloved wife for her supply and maintenance, If God so order that shee survive and that my funeral charges and other debts may happen, to be paid out of the estate. And whereas I have twenty six acres of land granted to me on the south side of Agawam River, I do give the same to my two sons Samuel and John Day. " [6]

Robert Day came from Ipswich. England, in the ship "Elizabeth," with his wife Mary; removed with Thomas Hooker and that company to Hartford, Conn., in 1636. He married Editha Stebbins, who came from England with her brother Edward Stebbins to Cambridge, Mass., in 1633, and removed to Hartford, Conn. Robert Day died , 1643.

Second Generation, Thomas Day, born , married October 27, 1659 Sarah Cooper, born in England, daughter of Lieut. THOMAS COOPER, who came from England in the ship "Christian," in 1635; removed to Springfield, Mass., and was killed by Indians October 5. 1675. Thomas Day died December 27, 1711. Mrs. Sarah Day died November 21, 1726.

Third Generation, Thomas Day, born November —, 1662. married Elisabeth Merrick.

(Thomas Merrick came from England to Roxbury. Mass., in 1636; removed to Hartford, Conn., in 1638 ; thence to Springfield. Mass. He married (second wife) 1653, Elizabeth Tilley, daughter of William Tilley, from England in the ship "Abigail," in 1635, with his wife Alice.

Second Generation, Elizabeth Merrick, born , 1661, married Thomas Day. Thomas Day removed to Colchester, Conn., about 1705, where he died.

Thomas Day, son of Robert Day of Hartford, married Sarah COOPER, daughter of Lieut. Thomas Cooper, who was born before her father came to Springfield. He died December 27, 1711, and his widow died November 21, 1726. Their children were:--
