It is not known when he came to America, but he enlisted in the Continental Army and served in the Revolution in the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment under Captain James Taylor and General Anthony Wayne. After the war, John went to South western Pennsylvania, where he married Elizabeth Keener in 1784. Elizabeth, a daughter of Samuel Keener, was born in Woodstock, VA. The family moved to Patterson Creek, Hampshire County VA (WV) where their only child was born in 1786. They later moved to O'Brien's Fork of Steer Creek in Braxton County VA (WV) where John died April 11, 1833.
In 1776 he enlisted into Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment in Company of Captain James Taylor, where he served as a wagon master. He continued in service until 1783. In June 1819 he was granted a pension of eight dollars a month for six years service.
