John Drake, Jr. , son of John Drake and Lettice Shakespear, was born in Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, England in 1616, and baptized there on August 25 of that year. He left a will on 12 September 1689 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.

biography

John Drake was born in Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, England in 1616, and baptized there on August 25 of that year. His parents were John Drake and Lettice Shakespear. His mother died when he was only seven years old, and his father soon remarried. Around 1630, his father brought the whole family; his sons by his first marriage, and his new wife and daughters, to New England. The family settled in Windsor, where John grew to manhood.

John married Hannah Moore on November 30, 1648, in Windsor. She was the daughter of John Moore of Windsor. John and Hannah raised a family of eleven children in Windsor. The date of John's death is not known, but he must have died in late 1689. Hannah had died in 1686.

John wrote his will on September 12, 1689 and it was proved on November 11. His wife is not mentioned, because she preceeded him in death. In the will, he says he is "of Windsor". He wrote the will in September and died in November, he didn't have time to move to another town, so he must have died in Windsor. Since John died in Windsor in 1689, he must have been buried in the Palisado. He mentions sons Job, Enoch, Simon, Joseph. He mentions son John's children, John and two daughters, the son having died before his father. He mentions his daughters Mary and Ruth, but it is clear that there are more daughters, probably married. He makes his son-in-law Samuel Barber one of his executors.

John Drake (b.1622, d.1688). His son John Drake is buried buried in Hope Meadow Cemetery (Simsbury, CT)with the dates of 1649-1688.

Of this family was JOHN, one of the Council of Plymouth, a member of the original company established by King James, in 1606, for settling New England. Several of his sons came hither and settled, viz.: Richard, who came over with two or more sons, and nine daughters, and settled at Hampton, N. H.; and John, who came to Boston in 1630 and settled in Windsor. From these are descended all of the name in America.

John married Elizabeth Rogers.

JOHN DRAKE, SR. had a lot granted to him twenty-two and one half rods wide. He had three sons and two daughters, all born before he came to Windsor. His son Job had a lot granted to him. He married Mary, daughter of Henry Wolcott, 1646, and had two sons and five daughters. The second son, John, had a lot granted to him. He married Hannah, daughter of Deacon Moore, and had five sons and six daughters, 1649-1674. The third son, Jacob, married Mary, daughter of John Bissell, and had no children. He had the homestead.

Per Stiles, John's tombstone records the date of death as 7 July ,1688, but the Simsbury Town Records indicates 9 July 1689.

someone needs to look into this. John Drake first wife was Lettice Shakespear, John Drake Jr. was born in 1622 Lettice Shakespear died in Nov 1623, records show a child was born to Elizabeth Moore and John Drake in 1625. Is this where the confusion lies?

JOHN DRAKE

Various compiled records and many genealogists indicate that the patriarch of the Connecticut Drake family was the John Drake who sailed from Plymouth, England, to Massachusetts Bay on the John and Mary in 1630, however, the synthetic passenger list compiled in 1993* does not include a John Drake. Additionally, further research uncovered another John Drake, who subsequently returned to England and has been confused with the John Drake who settled in Windsor, CT, appears in town records in1640, and dies on August 17, 1659.

According to Robert Charles Anderson in his The Great Migration Begins, the Connecticut patriarch of the family, John Drake, Jr., was born in Hampton (Warwickshire), England and received a land grant in Massacoh (Simsbury) in 1667, however there is additional confusion regarding the true recipient of the grant. Incomplete and often confusing birth and land records, coupled with generations of “John Drakes, mean that the origin of this Simsbury family remains a mystery, but one ready for further research and clarification. Regardless of his origin, we do know that the local family is descended from the John Drake who married Hannah Moore on November 30, 1648, in Windsor, CT.
