John Elderkin had first been married to a lady named Abigail. He was born at Fenns in Lincolnshire, England in 1612/16 and emigrated to America in 1637. He built the first merchant vessel ever owned in New England. John was a contractor and master builder of churches, mills, houses, bridges, and vessels. He went from Lynn to Dedham, then to Reading, Providence, and New London applying his trade. In 1661 he finally settled in Norwich, Connecticut, where he died on 13 June 1687.

Before recounting David’s travails and Mary’s heroism, it is important to place these characters within their familial and historical contexts.

The first Elderkin to set foot in North America was John Elderkin, who was born in England in approximately 1612. He landed at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1637, and traveled about New England before settling in New London, Connecticut in 1651. He was a builder who constructed corn mills in Dedham and Reading, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; and New London, Connecticut, where he also constructed a church.[i]

John Elderkin was about 44 when he married Elizabeth Drake, his second wife, in Windsor, Connecticut in June of 1687.[ii] The couple did as most of their generation did – they multiplied themselves many times over, and so did their children. Many of the Elderkins living in the United States today are descended from John Elderkin and Elizabeth Drake. There is an extensive body of research into their progeny.

   The origin of John Elderkin is unknown to me.

The Immigrant

John Elderkin seems to have traveled a bit during his lifetime in America, with stints in Lynn, Mass 1637, Reading, Mass 1646, Providence, Rhode Island 1648, New London, Conn 1651, Norwich, Conn 1664. He was a builder. A bridge was named after him and the Franklin Church history discusses the history of the Franklin, Conn church building that he built.

   Born:    1616, Per Savage: 71 when died 1687

Immigration: 1637, possibly with first wife Abigail [Kingsland/Kingsland?] and possibly with first two children. The estimated dates of birth for the two oldest are 1634 and 1636.

1) Abigail [Kingsland /Kingslane?] Probably married in England about 1634. Savage speculates that Pelatiah and Abigail are from the first wife. Hannah appears to be from the first wife, primarily because she is not listed in Savage's list of children from the second wife. He could have just missed her, however; as she married abt 1664. So, she could conceivably be from the second wife. Abigail was probably born in the same time frame as her husband (ie 1616) and died before about 1660, when John married for the second time. I have not determined the soruce for her suggested name for her as Kingsland. Torrey shows Kingslane?
2) Elizabeth Drake, about 1660, widow of William Gaylord and daughter of John Drake. He would have been about 44, she about 39. John and Elizabeth then had five children over the next approximate twelve years through 1672. This would mean she had her second family from when she was 39 to age 51. She survived her husband by twenty-nine years. She died June 18, 1716, in probably Norwich, New London, Conn with a stated age of 95. This age is likely a bit exaggerated, based on it giving her an age of 51 when having her youngest son. That is possible, but it's probably more likely the age is exaggerated.
It should be noted that when Elizabeth Drake married William Gaylord, he was a widower with six children. She then had two children with him. She then married John Elderkin, who likely had three children already. She then had five with John Elderkin. This means she was the natural mom of seven and the step-mom of nine more, for a total of sixteen. Her two children probably went with her into the Elderkin household. Not sure if the Gaylord kids lived with the Elderkins, or other kin, or were old enough to go on their own.

Where does the identity of the first wife come from? Savage didn't know her last name. Web pages showing Abigail Kingsland, Torrey shows Kingslane?. Were they married in England, or is she from another immigrant family?
Is child Hannah from the first wife or second wife? She isn't in Savage's list of kids from the second wife, but she didn't marry till 1664, per Torrey.

John Eldrekin was born in 1616 in England, some authorities say 1612 but in a court dispostion he gave in 1672 he states that he is 56 years old. An extensive biography is available in John Elderkin, One of the Founders of Connecticut. He was married twice, his first wife was Abigail. They were married about 1637. His second was to Elizabeth Drake Gaylord, daughter of John Drake and widow of William Gaylord, of Windham. They were married March 1, 1660. She died at Norwich in 1716. John Elderkin the second is the son of Elizabeth Drake and John. John the first, died in 1687 in Norwich, Connecticut, while the place of his burial is not known, his memorial has links to memorials for two of his children as well as a link to the book mentioned above the primary source for this brief sketch.[1]

John Elderkin was also a reputed contractor and Builder. He was recruited successfully to move from Providence Rhode Island by Governor Winthrop. He built the first two churches in both Norwich and New London, Connecticut. He also built the first Merchant ship ever produced at New London in 1661 He was joined in this endeavor by Richard Hendee Sr. in 1660-1661. John Elderkin was also a owner and builder of Several Mills both for Grain and Lumber. He was Granted many parcels of Land for his labors and Built many thriving businesses. He passed many of these businesses to Descendents and the Elderkin Family became one of the Wealthiest families in Connecticut. His 2nd wife Elizabeth was a direct descendent of Royalty in England and his association with Governor Winthrop is well documented. He is credited with building the first Town Meeting Hall in Norwich and for building Churches with pews which were status segregated in the churches. The allotment of this seating by status was very contentious; however, it lasted for Generations and became a source of Much Conflict among the Early Pioneers.

In 1638 received 20 acre grant in Lynn. He was a master Builder. He built the first church and second churches in Norwich and New London, and the first corn mill in each of those places. 1661: he constructed the first merchant vessel ever built in New London, the 'New London Tryall', at cost of over 200 pounds. He also kept the town inn at New London. (Ordinary Keeper). Many other mills, buildings and bridges in the area were built by John Elderkin.
