John Emil Finni

Accident No. 32. — September 18th, two young men, William Peterson, aged nineteen, and John Finn, aged eighteen, lost their lives by suffocation in No. 2 Shaft, Rhode Island Mine.

They had drilled eight holes in the drift, charged them and had set fire to the fuses and went to surface. Six holes exploded, and they at once went down into the drift to fire the two remaining holes which did not explode. They had been in the drift but a few minutes when Peterson was overcome with the smoke and gas and fell down in the drift. Finn went to surface and reported to Captain Wilson and again went down the shaft to help Peterson out of the drift. When he reached the bottom of the shaft he was overcome by the smoke and gas and fell down in the water at the bottom of the shaft. Captain Wilson and Charles Makara, the lander, went down the shaft, which is about fifty feet deep, and found Finn lying in the water at the bottom, and Peterson lying in the drift about twenty feet from the shaft. The unfortunate young men were told not to go down the shaft so soon after blasting.

An inquest was held before Justice Fisher.

Three witnesses were examined, and after hearing the testimony the jury returned the following verdict: "We, the jury, find that the said John Finn and William Peterson came to their deaths on the 18th day of September, 1899, at No. 2 Shaft, Rhode Island Mine, by suffocation from powder smoke, by going down the shaft, too soon after blasting."

Onnettomuus nro 32. — 18. syyskuuta. Kaksi nuortamiestä, William Peterson, 19-vuotias, ja John Finn, 18-vuotias, menettivät henkensä tukehtumalla Rhode Island -kaivoksen kuilussa nro 2.

He olivat poranneet kahdeksan reikää rintaukseen, panostaneet, sytyttäneet nallit ja palanneet maanpinnalle, Kuusi reikää räjähti, ja he menivät heti alas rintaukseen sytyttääkseen kaksi suutariksi jäänyttä reikää. He eivät ehtineet olla rinauksessa kuin muutaman minuutin, kun Peterson tuupertui savuun ja kaasuihin, ja putosi rintauksesta alas. Finn meni maanpinnalle ja raportoi kapteeni Wilson:ille, ja meni uudelleen alas kuiluun auttaakseen Petersonin pois rintauksesta. Kolme todistajaa kuultiin, ja todistajanlausuntojen jälkeen valamiehistö antoi seuraavan päätöksen: "Me, valamiehistö, toteamme että John Finn ja William Peterson menettivät henkensä 18. syyskuuta 1899 Rhode Island -kaivoksen kuilussa nro 2 tukehtumalla ruutisavuun, mentyään alas kuiluun liian pian räjäytyksen jälkeen."
