The New England Historic and Genealogical Register, Vol. 11, Jan 1857, pages 18-19 states: “8. John Franklin, born 7 Dec 1690; died Jan 1756; Married ______ Gooch; had but one son John, lost at sea, a young man grown”

John Franklin was born on June 2, 1729 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States to David Franklin and Elizabeth Ayres Franklin. John married Phoebe Parker on c. 1759 in Fort Stump, Washington County, Virginia, United States and had 12 children: John Franklin, Jr., David Franklin, Moses Franklin, Jemima Catherine Franklin, Jonathan Franklin, Samuel Joseph Franklin, Sally Franklin, Phoebe Franklin, Anna Franklin, Lydia Franklin, Mary Franklin, and Rachel B. Franklin. John passed away on 1818 in Connelly Springs, Burke County, North Carolina, United States.

Military Service:

• Between 1754 and 1763. John enlisted in the Virginia Militia in February 1754 and he was with Major George Washington at Fort Necessity in June of 1754 at the beginning of the French and Indian War.

John Franklin, Sr.( DAR Patriot A041773) was granted status to the DAR for PAID FOR SERVICES RENDERED. The DAR has accepted this from the following source:
HAUN , NC REV REV ARMY ACCOUNTS, VOL 1. PART II, Pg 223 This is from the North Carolina Treasury - I have not tried to locate this information as it is accepted by the DAR and Children of the American Revolution (CAR).

You did not have to be a soldier to gain patriot status through the DAR.

A man or woman had to aid the cause by supplying goods or services to aid the American fight for freedom. It appears that John Franklin, Sr was paid for help to the American cause.

I do not believe John Franklin, Sr. was a soldier, but aided the fight in other ways. His son, John Franklin, Jr. fought for freedom, but lost sight of the cause and briefly fought for the British before being captured by the Americans After his capture he fought for the Americans until the war ended.

The DAR and CAR accept his birth date as 6/2/1727, not 6/2/1729 , until it can be proven differently.

I happened across your genealogy and have some corrections for you.

The David Franklin who married Elizabeth Ayers in Boston was born in Haverhill, Mass. on 4 May 1692. He was son of Jonathan Franklin and Sarah Smith Stevens.

John Franklin, David's son, was born 2 Jun 1729 (not 1727) in Boston. He enlisted in the Virginia Militia in Feb of 1754 and he was with Maj. George Washington at Fort Necessity in June of 1754 at the beginning of the French and Indian War. In about 1758 or 1759 he married Phoebe (Parker?) near Fort Stump, Virginia, and his first son, John, was born near there in 1760. After the war ended, John and Phoebe moved to near Morganton, Rowan/Burke Co., N.C. in about 1763 or 1764.

Jonathan Franklin, b. 1774, Burke Co, NC, was one of John and Phoebe's five sons. He married Rachel in about 1792, and they had 7 children. He then married Jennie Hood in about 1805 and they had 8 children between 1806 and 1822. Mitchell Franklin, b. 1805 in GA, is not one of Jonathan and Rachel's sons.
