Sources

  • John may well have been the first of the Funk clan born in VA and he was still a minor when his father died in 1746. He was to receive the land where his father's mill stood when he came of age and at that time make a payment of cash to his sisters. In Jan. 1758 the Frederick Co. Court ordered an appraisal of the land so that this could be done. (from: Frederick Co. Order Bk 7, pg. 347).
  • John and his wife Catherine sold 21 acres of the 106-acre tract to adjacent land owner Peter Stover for 20 pounds on 13 August 1778. John Funk was deceased by 25 March 1784 when the Shenandoah County Court appointed his wife Catherine to serve as administratrix of the estate with Henry Funk Sr. and Benjamin Stickley as her securities on the bond. Shenandoah County, Virginia Will Book B, p. 72
  • In 1778 John Funk, husband of Catherine was appointed guardian of the children of late Dorothea Stickley Funk, sister of Catherine, Adam, Abraham, Dorothy and Elizabeth Funk, orphans of Adam Funk." (from Berry Wade’s Journal). [https://gw.geneanet.org/jspaetsch?lang=en&p=john&n=funk]
  • "John Funk served as a private in Capt. Stokes Co., 10th PA Regiment commanded by Col. Richard Hampton, from May 27, 1777 to 1781. He was a Captain when he was discharged." (from: “The Ancestors and Descendants of the Kuffel Sister” Edith K. Smith, pg. 32). [https://gw.geneanet.org/jspaetsch?lang=en&p=john&n=funk]
  • A witness Catherine's father Hans John Johannes Jottones Stöckli Stickley will was John's brother Henry Funk.
  • As to his wife "Catherine was a younger daughter of John Stickley of Frederick Co., and John Funk was named as a son-in-law in the settlement of Stickley’s estate. Her older sister, Dorothy, was wife of John's cousin, Adam Funk. A Bible with the birth dates for the children of John and Catherine is in possession of descendants of their son, Isaac Funk in Strasburg, VA." (from: "From the Rhine to the Shenandoah " Daniel W. Bly, Vol. 1, pg. 74 & 75).[https://gw.geneanet.org/jspaetsch?lang=en&p=john&n=funk]The will does not mention John Funk but the previous statement uses the word settlement so there may be another court case they are referring to, such as there was settlement of his estate listing heirs that was filed in January 1771. There is a John Funk as a purchaser on estate inventory
  • 18 June 1795 Widow/Son sell land next to Jacob Funk's Mill, Shenandoah County, VA. Document that shows Catherine the widow of John and her son Samuel selling a piece of land next Jacob Funk's Mill. Pg 2 of deed selling land at Jacob's Mill states it was a portion of the 2032 acres left by Jacob Funk senior and held by Jacob Funk junior who conveyed 106 to John Funk deceased who died intestate and the land descended to Samuel Funk eldest son of deceased John Funk.

It is Catherine Stickley Funk's brother, Jacob Stickley who signs son Samuel's marriage bond. "Know all men by these presents that we, Samuel Funk and Jacob Stickley, are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency, Beverley Esq., Governor of the Commonwealth ofVA and his successors in thefinalsum of £50 current money to be paid to the said Governor or his successor we bind our selves, our heirs and our assigns severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 7th day of July, 1791. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage suddenly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Samuel Funk and Elizabeth Cordell, spinster. Now, if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage and no damage (anyone?) thereby then the above obligation to be void ....in full force and virtue." Signed and Sealed in the presents of —Lee. Signed: Samuel Funk and Jacob Stickley. (from: “Funks of Morgan and Scott Counties IL” Ellie F. Funk and Mrs. Jade B. Funk) and (from: Shenandoah Co. Marriage Bonds, 1789-91, pg.867).
