John Turton Goff was living in Randolph County, Virginia (West Virginia) at the beginning of the Revolution and he and his brothers James, Thomas, and Salathiel enlisted in the 15 Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line at Romney, Virginia.

John Turton m. Elizabeth Welch in Maryland on April 20, 1759, likely in Prince Georges Co. They almost immediately set out for the frontier. They settled near the Minear Claim at St. George, being among the first settlers of Horseshoe Bottom of Cheat River in what is now Tucker Co, West Virginia. Elizabeth died about 1780. Soon thereafter, he married Monacah Carrico, daughter of Bartholomew Carrico, and sister to Catherine, James Goff's second wife. their marriage probably occurred in Monongalia Co.

John lived in the manner of a Virginia gentleman and kept a number of slaves on his plantation. In contrast to James and Catherine, John and Monacah maintained considerable elegance in their household and appointments. John was appointed one of the earliest Justices of the Peace of Monongalia Co. He was a very public spirited man. He became the sheriff of his county in 1800 until his death. Like his brothers, he managed to amass a considerable fortune, and his prominence as a leader was always felt on the frontier and in the civil affairs of the area. By the time of his death, John had acquired substantial amounts of land in both VA and MD. The 1804 tax records of Allegany Co MD which then included what is now Garrett Co, show that John was listed as the owner of 969 acres of land located in District #1.

John Turton Goff died while searching for daughter Tamar Goff who eloped with John Riddle.
