"John Goodrich, born in England, probably in or near Bury St. Edmonds,County Suffolk; came to America and first appears on the Coll. Rec. of Conn. (Hartford), Nov. 10, 1643; juryman, Dec. 4, 1645. March 4, 1646,Sept. 7, 1648; held lands in Wethersfield in 1644; married first, Elizabeth, daughter of Thos. Edwards, 1645; she died July 5, 1670; he married second, Mary, daughter of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming, and widow of John Stoddard, April, 1674; she was born in 1623. John Goodrich died in Wethersfield, April, 1680 [The Goodrich Family in America by Lafayette Wallace Case (Chicago :Fergus Printing Co., 1889), p. 33].

"JOHN GOODRICH, son of *John*, [son of] *William), born, probably inSuffolk, after 1611, died in Wethersfield, Conn., in April 1680. Hemarried, first, about 1644, ELIZABETH -----, who died in childbed, inWethersfield, 5 July 1670. He married, secondly, perhaps in Wethersfield, as her second husband, MARY (FOOTE) STODDARD, born inEngland about 1623, died, probably in Norwich, Conn., by 1685,daughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Deming) Foote and widow of JohnStoddard. She married, thirdly, LT. THOMAS TRACY, who died inNorwich, 7 Nov. 1685, aged seventy-six.

Mary (Foote) Stoddard had seven children by her first husband, and none by John Goodrich or Thomas Tracy. In the settlement of Tracy's estate she is not mentioned so undoubtedly had deceased. After the death of John Goodrich's first wife, Elizabeth, the children were taken to Sudbury, suggesting that this was the home of their mother's people. John Goodrich's son, Joseph, in his will in 1680, makes his : loving uncell Thomas Read Senor and Thomas Read Jeuner" his "exsecktours." Joseph; sister Mary had married, three years earlier, Thomas Read Jr., but that does not explain why Joseph called Thomas Read Sr., his uncle. Apparently the will of the father of Thomas Read Sr., also a Thomas Read, shows that Thomas had no sister Elizabeth to marry John Goodrich and the will of John Goodrich's father gives no daughter Ketharine so Thomas's wife was not sister to John Goodrich.

Apparently the only way that Thomas Read could be uncle to Joseph Goodrich was to have Goodrich's wife Elizabeth ----- and Read's wife, Katharine -----,sisters. It is very probable that this was the case and that it was the Reads, who took charge of the younger Goodrich children, when Elizabeth died. ..... (P) John Goodrich and Clement Chaplin were fined, the former 40s. the latter 5 pounds, for signing a letter against the minister of Wethersfield in 1643.

John Goodrich served on the Jury, and, in 1646 and 1648, he appears in minor court actions. He served again on the Jury in 1649, 1650, 1653, 1654 and 1661, and appears in various other activities of the town.

In a census of inhabitants of Wethersfield, taken in 1670, "John Goodreg psons 8 Wheat & indean 10,"is named, his brother, William, also being listed.

At the time of his second marriage, John Goodrich entered into a pre-nuptial agreement with Mrs. Stoddard

...Mary's mother, Elizabeth (Deming) Foote, married, secondly, Gov.Thomas Welles and died his widow; and in a will drawn in 1678, mentioned her daughter Goodrich and grandson John "Stodder," among other heirs. This marriage of John Goodrich, which placed him in the society of the elite of the day shows his position with the rulers of Connecticut.

John Goodrich left a will, dated 9 June 1672, which was refused probate, 23 Apr. 1680, as the heirs objected and the executors refused to act.
