About Ensign William Goodrich

Ens William Goodrich Sr. BIRTH 13 Feb 1622, Bury St Edmunds, St Edmundsbury Borough, Suffolk, England DEATH 14 Nov 1676 (aged 54), Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA BURIAL Wethersfield Village Cemetery, Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA, MEMORIAL ID 17974712, Photos by Steve Goodrich

Note: The following is in honor of Carl Hoffstedt, who at an early date began detailing his Goodrich family line on Findagrave.

Ens. William Goodrich, one of two brothers who emigrated from England, son of John Goodrich and Margary Howes. He was bapt. Feb. 13, 1621/2 at St. Mary Church in Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England and d. at Wethersfield, Conn. prior to Nov. 14, 1676, the date his estate inventory was taken.

Called "William the younger" in his father's 1632 will at Bury St. Edmonds, William had an older brother named William, called "William the elder" in their father's will, who became a minister of the Anglican Church, married, left no children and died testate in 1678 in Hessett, Suffolk, England leaving bequests to his two brothers residing in New England.

When William "the younger" and his older brother John Goodrich emigrated to New England is unknown. In their father's will of Apr. 1632, the elder Goodrich named four supervisors of his will, including Clement Chaplin, a grocer, of Bury St. Edmonds. Clement Chaplin registered prior to Apr. 17, 1635 for passage from London aboard the Elizabeth and Ann, Roger Cooper, Master, and apparently sailed alone soon after May 14, 1635. There is no corroboration that Chaplin was the guardian of John and William Goodrich, or that John and William Goodrich were his wards, as no Goodrich is listed for the same 1635 passage despite numerous persons under 20 years of age being listed as passengers. In Nov. 1635 Chaplin appears in the records of Cambridge, Mass. and was initially of the Rev. Thomas Hooker company that settled Hartford, Conn.

Stiles in the "History of Ancient Wethersfield" claims William Goodrich and older brother John came to Wethersfield from Watertown, Mass. No record can be found that they ever resided in Watertown.

On Oct. 4, 1648 of record at Hartford, Conn. (repeated in the Hartford First Church catalogue as a town marriage record)[1], William m. Sarah Marvin, dau. of Matthew and Elizabeth Marvin, bapt. Dec. 27, 1631 at Great Bentley in Essex, England. They had nine children born of record in Wethersfield, Conn. where William settled.

Today most Goodrich families in the USA are descendants of William Goodrich and Sarah Marvin.

[1] Hartford VRs: Goodrich, William, m. Sara Maruen (i.e., Marvin), Oct. 4, 1648. [in this era, in old English handwriting the letter "u" represented the letter "v" and the letter "v" represented the letter "u".]

[2] Manwaring's Hartford Probate District abstract of Ens. Willian Goodrich's Nov. 14, 1676 dated inventory misstates the ages of the four sons John, William, Ephraim and David. The inventory was taken on a date in the old Julian calendar in which March 25th was the first day of the new year. On the reverse of the 2nd page of the inventory is the following with the [annotated] historical date of birth in the modern Gregorian calendar: • "John Goodrich is 24 years old ye 20th day of May next. [b. 20 May 1653] • William Goodrich is 17 years old ye 8th day of Feb'y next. [b. 8 Feb. 1659/60] • Ephraim Goodrich is 14 years old ye 2d day of June next. [b. 2 June 1663] • David Goodrich is 10 years old ye 4th day of March next." [b. 4 March 1666/7]

[3] The current Findagrave memorial for David, who died a Colonel of the Wethersfield militia, does not include a photo of what in 1899 Tillotson (Wethersfield Inscriptions) inventoried as his then standing gravestone:

"Here lies Interr'd the Body of Colnl David Goodrich, Esq. who Departed this Life Janry 23d A.D. 1755. In the 88th year of his Age."

The Conn. Society that erected the two existing military-related gravestones shown in David's memorial corrupted the symbol "Æ" for the Latin term "Ætatis suæ" to incorrectly mean a person's chronological age.

Revised (added to) 7/29/2018

Inscription At the time of William's death the Wethersfield Village Cemetery was the only cemetery in Wethersfield. If he once had a gravestone, by 1899 it no longer existed.

Ens William Goodrich, Sr
Birth 13 Feb 1622 Bury St Edmunds, St Edmundsbury Borough, Suffolk, England Death 14 Nov 1676 (aged 54) Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA Burial Wethersfield Village Cemetery Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA Memorial ID 17974712 · View Source

(As speculation, and nothing more, it would reason that the eldest son would inherit and therefore stay in Hegessett, but it needs to be proven.) This profile concerns the son William who came to the New World and married Sarah Marvin in 1648. This William became a Freeman of Connecticut on 15 May 1656. He became an Ensign in the Connecticut militia. He died in Nov 1676, survived by his widow Sarah, and many children. (Seehis will.) William immigrated to New England in 1635 and with him came his brother, Henry, John and Richard. He was made a freeman on May 15, 1656 and was deputy from Weathersfield to the General Court from May 15, 1662 to October 1666. He was commissioned Ensign of the Wethersfield "Train Band on May 11, 1665 and held this title in all public records as long as he lived.

William was born in Bury St. Edmunds, County Suffolk, England and came to America in 1635. His father was John Goodrich and his mother was Marjerie Howe Goodrich. His parents remained in England and are buried at Bury St. Edmunds in County Suffolk. Most of the Goodrichs in the USA today are descendants of William. Ensign William Goodrich, a son of John and Margerie (Howes) Goodrich of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England was baptized February 13, 1621/2 at Bury St. Mary.William probably came to America in 1635 with his older brother John and their guardian Clement Chaplin on the Elizabeth. Clement Chaplin departed Cambridge with the followers of Rev. Thomas Hooker in 1636 and came to Hartford, but settled instead in nearby Wethersfield, where he was the Ruling Elder. William Goodrich married on October 4, 1648 in Hartford, Connecticut Sarah Marvin (1631-1702), a daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Marvin of Great Bentley, Essex. William and Sarah had 5 sons and 4 daughters, and lived out their lives in Wethersfield. William died before the inventory of his estate taken November 14, 1676, and was buried in Wethersfield Village Cemetery in a grave that probably had one of the perishable markers from that time that are no longer visible.

Was one of the 26 soldiers on May 26, 1637 under Captain John Mason who took part in the capture of Peuqot Indian Fort near the Mystic River. Estimated 400 - 700 Peuqot lost their lives.

The Goodrich name comes down through William but his brother John did have 3 daughters so there are females from the Goodrich line not of William.
