About John Etherington Hadley

Emmett, Idaho - John E. Hadley, 76, naive of West Weber, died yesterday in Emmett. Mr, Hadley was born August 24, 1882, in West Weber, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Etherington Hadley. His first wife, Amy Alvord Hadley, died in 1953. He later married Kate Whitley. Surviving are his widow, eight sons and daughters, Mrs. Henry (Florence) Havlicak, American Falls, Idaho; Leroy and Harold Hadley, Emmett; Alvin Hadley, Montour, Idaho; Carl Hadley, Bountiful; Mrs. Harold (Doris) Relmann, Arlington, Calif., Mrs, Lynn (Allene) Fowers, Ogden; Mrs. Ramsey (Elda) Thomson, Medford, Ore., one brother, Samuel Hadley Jr., Taylor; three sisters, Mrs.. J. B. (Elizabeth) Hunter and Mrs. Howard (Emily) Keyser, Ogden; Mrs. Edith McLean, Rockland, Idaho. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the LDS Emmett Second Ward Chapel. Friends may call at the Beatty Chapel, Emmett, tomorrow night and Monday, until services.

John Etherington Hadley, 76, died Friday in an Emmett hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Hadley, who came to Idaho in 1910, was born in Ogden, Utah on August 24, 1882. He came to Rockland, Idaho in 1920 where he became active in the Farm bureau and was a member of the school board. He came to Emmett in 1943 and had resided here since that time. He was married to Amy Alvord on December 16, 1903 at Salt Lake, She died in 1953 and he was married to Kate Whiteley on August 20, 1957 at Idaho Falls. Mr. Hadley was a member of the LDS Church, Surviving is his wife in Emmett; four sons, Roy and Harold Hadley of Emmett, Carl. . . The rest of the obituary (clipping) is missing. A hand-written obituary was also found, but it does not indicate who wrote it. It reads as follows: John Etherington Hadley was born at West Weber, Weber County, Utah on August 24, 1882. A son of Elizabeth Ann Etherington and Samuel Hadley. He married Amy Alvord in the Salt Lake Temple on December 16, 1903. They resided in West Weber until 1910, where he was engaged in farming. While here, two children, Florence and Leroy, were born. They moved to Rockland Valley in April 1910 where they took over a ranch that belonged to his Grandfather Etherington. In 1912 they homesteaded 160 acres. They cleared the brush from this acreage and dug a cistern and well for drinking purposes. In 1913 lived in a two-room dirt-roofed log cabin. They were real pioneers and endured many things. A hand-woven carpet was used on the floor with straw beneath it for padding. His wife, Amy, was interested and efficient in nursing and went the full length of the valley nursing and helping the sick.

John's wife, Amy Alvord Hadley, passed away on August 30, 1953 after suffering a heart attack. He lived alone for four years before remarrying to Kate Warwood Whiteley, a widow. They were happy together until John also died while resting in the Emmett Hospital after a heart attack. He died on October 17, 1958. Both he and Amy are buried in the Emmett City Cemetery.
