John Hamilton of Butternock is the fifth son of Sir David Hamilton of Cadzow and his wife Janet Keith. Hamilton Memoirs, page 209 John Hamilton of Butternock is not the same person as Sir John Hamilton, 4th of Cadzow who was his older brother. Hamilton Memoirs, page 48
In 1390 John Hamilton had a charter for the lands of Butternock from Duncan, Earl of Lennox: "Carta de Terris de Buthernock facta Johanni de Hamilton, per Duncanun, Comitem de Levenax." Cartularium comitatus de Levenax etc., pp. 71-2 On 6 May 1394 the Earl confirmed a contract of marriage between: "John de Hamilton and Margaret Frazer, his wife" and gave them possession of Buthernock in conjunt fee and liferent. Ibidem, pp. 72-3 Anderson makes mention of these charters in his account of the family. Hamilton Memoirs, page 209
John Hamilton of Butternock probably died before 1423, when his son John had possession of Buthernock. He was certainly dead before 1468, when his grandson Robert was served heir to his deceased grandfather. Hamilton Memoirs, page 210
