John had 4 siblings: Edward Haseltine and 3 other siblings. John passed away on month day 1690, at age 78 at death place, Massachusetts. https://www.myheritage.com/names/john_hazeltine

The John Hazeltine Line

JOHN HAZELTINE, born probably in Yorkshire, England, about 1622-23, deposed in 1663, aged about forty years, died in Haverhill, Mass., 23 Dec 1690. He married, probably in Essex County, Mass., possibly in Boston, Mass., about 1644, Joan Anter, born probably about 1625, died in Haverhill, 17 July 1698.

Joan Anter was a maid servant of Mr. Martin Holman of Biddeford, England. She was admitted to Boston Church, 13 Feb. 1643, and dismissed to Rowley, Mass., 31 Mar 1644, letter of dismissal from the Boston Church being sent to her, 8 Mar. 1646, she being, "now wife of one Haseltine of the ch. of Rowley."

John Hazeltine evidently came with his older brother, Robert Hazeltine [see account of Robert], in the company of the Rev. Ezekiel Rogers in 1637. He settled at Rowley where he was made a freeman, 13 May 1640. Some authorities state that he was in Boston in 1643, but if so he returned to Rowley. In 1643, in a town survey it is shown that there had been, "granted to John Haseltine one lott containing two acres bounded on the south Side by John Trumbles meadow, the one end butting on the brooke, the other on Thomas Leavers meadow." Of salt marsh, he had, "two acres lying on the west side of Thomas Tenney," in the second division of fresh marsh, one acre, etc. He also owned "five young cattell." (Rowley town records.)

Children, probably all born in Rowley, Mass., possibly the first two were born in Boston and recorded in Rowl* ey:

  • Samuel b. 20 Feb 1645-46, d. 10 aug 1717, aged 72; m. 28 Dec. 1670. Haverhill, Deborah cooper.
  • Mary, b. 9 Oct 1648; m. Nathan Webster
  • Nathaniel, b. 20 Sept 1656, d. 14 jan 1723-24; m. (1) Dec 1680. Deliverance Robie; m. (2) 20 July 1688, widow Ruth Jaques.
  • John, b. abt 1658, deposed aged 16 in 1673 ae 24 in 1682, d. 5 apr. 1733, Haverhill; m. 7 July 1682, Mary Nelson.

Landed at Salem, Massachusetts Bay in 1637 with Rev Ezekiel Rogers and about 60 other families. He came with his brother Robert, who was probably older than he. After staying about a month at Salem the party moved to Essex County and settled near the present town of Rowley. They originally called the settlement Rogers' Plantation but changed the name to Rowley after a town in Yorkshire where some in the group had come from. The Rev Rogers was a non-conformist and hoped to enjoy religious freedom in the new land. Robert and John took the oath of Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on 13 May 1640. The will of John Hazelton was made 17 August, 1689, proved March 31, 1691 and his widow, Joan Anter died July 17, 1698. [Gen. Sketches of Robert & John Hazelton, p 101,102]

John Hazelton, a brother of Robert, one of Rev Ezekiel Rogers' colony at Rowley, was one of the 1st three settlers of that part of Rowley afterward incorporated as Bradford. He lived in Bradford quite a number of years, but previous to 1660, he had crossed the Merrimack river and become a resident of Haverhill originally called Pentucket. This town was settled in 1640 by 12 men from Newbury and Ipswich. Two years later there were 30 settlers. the first town meeting was held in 1643. In the autumn of 1648, the first meeting house was built, and in the same year a ferry was established by Robert Hazelton at the place still called "the old ferry way," situated a little east of the foot of Kent St. This ferry was to connect the two settlements of Bradford and Haverhill and rendered the inhabitants of the two places as neighbors. In 1665 John Hazelton gave the people of Bradford once acre of land for a meeting house lot, on condition that the grantees should care for it and keep it properly fences, but subsequently his son Samuel Hazelton who resided in Bradford released the people of Bradford from this obligation. The will of John Hazelton was made Aug 17, 1689 and proved Mar 31, 1691. He died Haverhill, Dec 23, 1690 (aged 70 years) and his widow died Haverhill, July 17 1698.

Memorial History of Bradford p18 The following vote of the town was passed, Jan ye 5th, 1665 "Whereas, John Haseltine, senior, of Haverhill, having given to ye inhabitants of ye town of Bradford one acre of land to set their meeting-house on, and for a burying-place, and did engage them to fence it and maintain it; but now upon ye motion of his son Ensign Samuel Haseltine, of Bradford, he seemeth to be willing to release ye town of that engagement, provided they will set up a good, sufficient five rail fence from Mr. Symmes' fence to Goodman Hall's fence below the burying-place, this ye town assents to." It is probable that John Haseltine removed to Haverhill after the first few years of residence in Bradford. His name does not appear in the records of the town, and when the church was formed his name is not among the members. He was a member of some church, for he was made a "freeman" in Rowley in the year 1640. I think our John Haseltine is the same man who appears about this time in the records of Haverhill, and who was one of the early deacons of Rev John Ward's church there.

"John was freeman, May 13, 1640. He m. Joan Auter, a servant of Mr. Holman, of England, town of Biddlford, and county of Devon. He came to America from England, and was a member of the church in Boston, Mass, in 1643, and soon after, with his brother Robert, settled in Rowley, where his children were born. Both owned land and resided on Holmes St., where the first settlers lived, in Rowley, Mass. They lived there till about 1650, when lands were laid out to them on the Merrimack River in what is now Bradford, where both resided, and where Robert died. Previous to his brother's death, John left him, and in 1659 bought land in Haverhill, west of Little River, by Long Hill and probably lived where his descendants have owned. It is about two miles from City Hall, on the street now called North Broadway, and leading to Derry, NH. He was born in 1620 in England and died in Haverhill, Dec. 23, 1690 at 70 years, and his wife Joan died when "aged" July 17, 1698." (from History of Winham)[Edward Heseltine.ftw]

He was baptized in Knedlington, Howden, East Yorkshire, England, 22 August 1612. Religion: religion unknown.

There have been many spellings of the last name, I have made the spelling the same as my current relations. The other spellings are: Haseltine (most popular in older documents) and Heselton.

https://www.immigrantships.net/v4/1600v4/johnoflondon16380000.html Brothers Robert & John Hazelton of Biddeford, England arrived in 1638 aboard the John of London and settled initially in Rowley, Mass. The early records have the spelling as Heselton, but it has undergone many changes and written as Haseltine, Hazeltine, Hassaltine, Heseltine, Hezeltine, Hazleton, and Hazelton. In the old country the name was originally Hazelden, from hazel a tree or shrub, and den a valley; the hazel valley, or, the valley where the hazels grow.

My Mother was a Hazelton, directly from Robert and his wife, Ann Wood, where this branch ended up in Bangor, Maine.

Christopher Garrett Wright "Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts" by Blodgette and Jewett ______________________________________________________ http://www.hastingscountry.com/haseltine.html

Two brothers, Robert and John Haseltine, emigrated to New England in 1637 in a group of about sixty families from Yorkshire and Devonshire, England. They and their leader, the Rev. Ezebiel Rogers began a new settlement in Rowley, MA. This settlement grew to encompass the present towns of Rowley, Georgetown, Boxford and Bradford. The surname Haseltine has evolved into various additional spellings such as: Hazeltine, Hasaltine, and Hazelton. It was originally Hazelden, from hazel a tree or shrub, and den a valley.

Robert and John Haseltine took the freeman's oath on May 13, 1640. This web page outlines some of the descendents of John Haseltine.
