  • JOHN4 HILL (William,3 Roger,2 William1) was the youngest child of the family, according to the Visitation, but was of age in 1592, so was born probably about 1570. by his father's will in 1592, he received L10, and from the will of his brother, Thomas4 Hill, it appears that this John4 Hill was married and had, at least sons John5 and Jonathan5 ; but knowledge of his residence or marriage has not yet been secured. Children:
    • i. John,5 b. about 1600.
    • ii. JONATHAN.
  • JOHN5 HILL (John,4 William,3 Roger,2 William1), born probably about about 1600, was a yeoman, of age, and living in Chaffcombe, unmarried in 1628 ; but there is no mention of him in the Chaffcombe registers, and the writer has not been able to obtain any further information of him. He may have died unmarried or lived elsewhere in England ; but the following circumstances favor a supposition that this John5' Hill of Chaffcombe may have been identical with John Hill, the emigrant to Dorchester, Mass. ; both were born somewhere about 1600; the latter was married about 1630, the former was unmarried at the end of 1628, but had an inducement from his uncle's will to marry soon ; both were yeoman or farmers ; John5 of Chaffcombe disappears from there about the time that John the emigrant appears in New England ; practically all of the colonists who came to Dorchester, Mass., before 1635 were from the three adjoining counties of Somerset, Dorset, and Devon ; John5 Hill of Chaffcombe was certainly intimate with the Deanes and Cogans, and doubtless with other families in Chard, who came to Dorchester, Mass. ; two of the daughters of John1 Hill of Dorchester, Mass., married into the Gray and Flsher families of Taunton, Mass., who were connected with the Cogans and other families of Chard ; John5 Hill of Chaffcombe was an own, but poor, cousin of John5 Hill of Dorchester, England, who was interested in the "Dorchester Company," which sent parties of colonists to Dorchester, Mass., from 1630 to 1634.'
  • Although the name "John Hill" is very common and found in all counties in England, and in many of the parishes, which fact makes identity difficult, still the above circumstances make it seem worth while to investigate in the above line for further information in attempting to trace the ancestry of John1 Hill of Dorchester, Mass.
