John HUFF (c 1785 VA - after 1860 census and before 6 Dec 1866 Fentress Co, TN) joined or moved with his brothers Daniel and Philip, and brother-in-law Pearson MILLER (who may have preceeded them in the move) from what was then Montgomery County, Virginia (now Floyd County), to KY. John and Pearson eventually settled in that area of TN which became Overton, then Fentress Co., Tennessee. By family tradition, the John Huff family lived on Wolf Run (Pall Mall, Fentress County, Tennessee) in the Cumberland River basin, downstream from Huff brother's families in Kentucky (probably less than 20 miles distant).
On people's family trees, John has often been represented as having married one Prudence MILLSAP or MILLSAPS. However, this has undoubtedly been an error, and needs to be changed to Prudence "Nancy" Chism (or Chisam). Prudence Millsap was merely an earlier widely disseminated guess--and was so indicated as a guess--based on a record that one John Huff married or took out a bond to marry one Prudence Millsap, in Montgomery County, Virginia. John was no longer resident of Virginia at that time and the record would appear to have merely been a coincidence as to the given names. In a more authoritative source--a letter or listing from about 1910 that has been attributed to a granddaughter of John Huff, Julia Ann Marcum--John's spouse was identified as Nancy Chisham. A reasonable explanation could be that Prudence Chism (spelling variations for the surname appear to include Chisam or Chisham) went by Nancy. Her full name may have been Prudence Ann Chism (or Chisam), with her using her middle name, which in turn could have resulted in "Nancy" which was often a nickname for Ann. Or, of course, her name may actually have been Prudence Nancy Chism (or Chisam). The gravestone of "Nancy," though in bad shape, reads Prudence.
