- According to records found on Ancestry24.com, John James Cahill was a clerk in the Military Secretary's Office at The Castle in Cape Town (1841 Cape Almanac - National Archives). Both his father and grandfather were stationed at The Castle.
- Another record in the 1838 Cape Almanac gives the same information, and gives his address a 6 Buitenkant.
