John Toothman was born in Virginia, at Winchester in Frederick County. The date is debatable, but Feb 1798 seems most likely (conflicting evidence says May 9, 1800). He was married, around the early 1820's to Cassandra Arnett (spelled Cassander in most records). She was born in 1799 in Monongalia County, (west) Virginia, the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Leggett) Arnett, and died Nov. 06, 1890 in Marion County, West Virginia. It should be noted here that the Toothman family resided in that part of Monongalia County which in 1842, became Marion County, therefore records of this John and Cassandra, and those of others of roughly the same generation, were split between the two counties.

John was a farmer in Monongaila/Marion County all of his life. He died there on April, 15, 1875. He and Cassandra had eight children, all born in Monongalia/Marion County
