About Phebe / Philippina Toothman

The following was posted by Rick Toothman on 9 April 2001 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/toothman/messages/129.html:

"It appears she was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret __ (c1750?-aft1820), who married Jacob VALENTINE (c1750/53-1820). At least Jacob, in his will (Bedford Co, PA), goes to some length in naming "stepdaughter Feby" who is to share equally in his estate with his own children.

This seems to indicate he was not her father. However, she was baptized 20 Nov 1774 at the Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, MD, and given there as the daughter of Jacob and Margaret VALENTINE, so it would appear she did not have a father of record. (There would have been no problem presenting her to the pastor as the legitimate daughter of a deceased father, if that had been the case and Margaret a widow when she married Jacob, so this probably means they were not telling the pastor the exact details.) She's "Philippin" in the bp record; the same name is used in one of the 2 records for her and Christian at the Lutheran church in Cumberland, MD.

("Phebe" is not a German name, and "Philippina" is pretty rare in my experience but does occur. Under the circumstances, it would seem that her true name is Philippina but she was called Phebe -- just as her husband Christian was usually called "Christopher" in WV records, or German women named Apollonia get their names changed to "Abigail" in the local records. The name Philippina is so uncommon in the areas where I work that I don't know what the nickname for it was. It probably sounded fairly close to "Phebe," though.)

There seems little doubt this bp record is for the same woman who married Christian DUCHMANN, though it is not proven. The VALENTINE had 3 children bp at this time, the others being sons who were 1 year and a few months, respectively. Both sons' names recur in Jacob's 1820 will."

GEDCOM Note

We think this Phebe is the same Phebe that is named in Jacob Valentines will of 1820 in Bedford PA
