Origins

BACKGROUND HISTORY: About sixty years ago our family had some faithful genealogists. A great deal of research by them produced the belief (incorrect) that our Knight ancestors came from Romsey, Hampshire, England, and that John (Sr.) migrated to America in 1635 aboard the ship JAMES with his brother Richard. They both were tailors who arrived in Boston Bay and settled in Newbury, MA, north of Boston.

RECENT DISCOVERIES: Our line from Joseph Knight reaches back through Benjamin, Samuel, Samuel, John (Jr.) and finally to John (Sr.) who settled in Charlestown, MA. The two sets of Johns (in Newbury and Charlestown) were cousins and because of the close proximity of Newbury and Charlestown, it was assumed that these families of Johns were the same, and that John (Sr.) of Newbury migrated to Charlestown. Probate records now prove that the Newbury John (Sr.) lived and died in Newbury and that our set of Johns in Charlestown were from a different immigrant family, and we thus needed to find a new line to England.

LATEST RESEARCH: Because of this, several members of the family spent months and hired professional researchers to find a new "bridge" to England for the Charlestown family. That "bridge" was found in the names of Nicholas Knight and Jane Hewatt who are the parents of John Knight, chr. 1601 who married Mary Pickering and sailed for America with four children, and eventually settled in Charlestown.

The above WiKi Tree "confirmed matches" showing different fathers are incorrect. John Knight of Charlestown/Watertown was born to Nicholas Knight of Romsey. Profile is locked...John's real dates are b:1601 to d:1674. Also the "green plaque" in the photos is not this John, but rather his cousin John Knight of Newbury.

'Use caution with your research on John Knight. Don"t latch on to the first John Knight you see. There were a few. This John of Charlestown, MA is a different John Knight than the one from Newbury, MA, (first cousin of Charlestown John). John Knight of Newbury, MA (son of Nicholas' brother William ) settled along the Parker River with his brother Richard (both tailors) and fathered the Joesph-Polly-Newell Knight Mormon church founding folks and involved the Ingersoll clan.

This John Knight (of Charlestown) was also known as "of Watertown" then of "Woburn" as Charlestown was sliced-up to create new towns. John Knight's (of Charlestown) father was Nicolas. Nicolas's brothers Philip and William also fathered sons named John Knight. Phillip's son John was also in Charlestown with Mary Chickering and 5 children.

John was by trade listed as a Maulster (beer-maker), he was a householder in Cambridge in 1635; a proprietor in Watertown, 1636; a freeman in Watertown in 1636. In 1640 he sold land in Watertown and bought land in Sudbury. He sold Watertown land in 1652. He was a proprietor in Sudbury, lived in Charlestown/Woburn in 1653. He was a signer of a petition for church liberty. John died in Woburn.

(Added 2012 Don Knights) P.S. ABOUT JOHN KNIGHT of NEWBURY...I have extensive research penned by the late Alfred C. Knight of Marston Mills, Ma. It has six generations of the Knight family beginning in Newbury with the brothers from Romsey. I will gladly share.
