Son of William F. Lemay and Anna Essary Came to Hamilton Co, in 1862. John was a blacksmith. Civil War Veteran Company H, 155th Illinois Voluneer Infanty.

Married #1 Lucinda Catherine Morgan LeMay 20 Mar 1867 Alexander Co, IL. Lucinda born 06 Nov 1851 and died 12 Oct 1877 buried Smith Cemetery Dale, Hamilton Co, IL. John and Lucinda had 4 children, 1 died in infancy, Mary Ann Lemay, Martha Elizabeth LeMay, and Marion LeMay.

Married #2 Angelina Johnson 28 April 1878 Hamilton Co, IL. 12 children, 7 died in infancy and Nellie Turpin died 1919.

At the age of 15 (he claimed to be 18) enlisted and served with Company H of the 155th Illinois Infantry from February 9, 1865 to June 17, 1865. He joined Company H and they moved to Louisville, Kentucky then to Nashville and Murphreesboro, Tennessee February 24 to March 3rd, 1865, attached to the 2nd Brigade charged with the defenses of the Nashville & Chattanooga R.R. Departnent of the Cumberland till April, 1865. Discharged June 17, 1865 whereupon he went to Broughton, Illinois and opened a blacksmith shop.
