About John M'Kie, Laird of Myrton
listed as landowner in 1490 and 1504 in Myrton/McKee - history of Galloway - Edinburgh
History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, FHL #941.49 H2m 1994, v 2, p 318 states: "It [Mertoun M'Kie now Mertoun Hall] afterwards passed to the M'Kies...John M'Kie was in possession in the year 1490. In 1504 we again find John M'Kie. In the year 1555, Richard M'Kie had succeeded, who was followed by Archibald M'Kie in possession in 1587. The lands then seem to have passed from the M'Kies."
John was originally placed by editors in the Balmaghie family. However, he has been moved into the Cumoden branch, which is a more likely location, because he was a witness, (as Joh. Makke de Myrtoun) along with Duncan (as Duncano Makke) and David (as Dav. Makke) -- probably his brothers -- to a charter at Whithorn 5 May 1500 (Reg. Mag. Sig. xiii, 420 (Jac.IV) = Great Seal (1984 ed.) 2: 538, item #2533). Since Duncan was subsequently named in the lands of Drumavernane, and since those lands were dower lands of Marion Makmakene who married Patrick of Cumloden, John was placed in that family.
There is also a reference to "umq. Joh. Mathy" on Great Seal #2716, which may refer to him (poor translation), since Wil. Makky and Alex. Machy are in the document (Reg. Mag. Sig. xiii, 600=Great Seal (1984 ed.) 2: 576-577, item #2716).
