Origins and Family - with disputes

“ John Madison & Agatha Strother of VA” By Robert Allen April 28, 2000 at 10:04:51 from https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/madison/355/

The often repeated story in the Forum and elsewhere is that John Madison, first clerk of Augusta Co., VA, was the son of John Madison and Isabella (Minor/Todd?).

According to the Strother family genealogy published in "Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol. III, and a couple of Madison lawsuits in Augusta Co., VA in 1800 or thereabouts which summarize the Will of John Madison, this is what is known about John Madison's children:

  • 1.William Madison, who married Elizabeth Preston, died in 1782.At the time of his death his only children were Susanna Smith Madison and Agatha Strother Madison. He apparently died fighting in the American Revolution.
  • 2.Thomas Madison who married Susannah Henry, sister of "The" Patrick Henry. He died in 1784.
  • 3.Rowland Madison who married Anne Lewis, sister to Miriam Lewis and Col. Andrew Lewis, Jr., below, died in 1796.
  • 4.James Madison married Sarah Tate and became the first native Episcopal bishop of Virginia and a President of William & Mary College.
  • 5.George Madison who married Jane Smith and who was given 2000 acres of land in KY in his father's will and later became governor of KY.
  • 6.Margaret Madison who married Judge William McDowell (but see 10 below).
  • 7.Richard Madison who married __?__ Preston.
  • 8.Gabriel Madison who married Miriam Lewis, sister of Anne Lewis (above) and Col. Andrew Lewis, Jr., (below).
  • 9.Elizabeth Madison who married Col. Andrew Lewis, Jr., in 1780.
  • 10.Daughter Madison who married William Lewis, brother to Col. Andrew Lewis, Jr., in 1787 and was still married to him in 1800.It is possible that this daughter could be Margaret (above).

From the above information it seems that William Madison died in 1782 in his 20s (he only had two children when he died), Elizabeth Madison was born in the 1760s to have married in 1780.The unnamed daughter (Margaret?) was born about 1760 to have married William Lewis in 1787.If Elizabeth was the youngest child (which isn't proven) and the 9-10 children were born over a 20 year period of time, John Madison and Agatha were married about 1750 (Katherine Benbow's message at this forum says 1745).

The Augusta Court was formed on December 9, 1745, and John Madison was appointed as the first Clerk.Augusta Co., VA Court Order Book I, page 1.The first Augusta County, VA, reference of John Madison's wife, Agatha, was in a Deed to Robert McClenachan, Gent., of 731 acres at the corner of Adam Thompson and John Ramsey and John Harvey.John Madison was described as "John Madison, Gent."Augusta County, VA Deed Book 3, page 388.Agatha Madison, widow of John Madison, was still alive in 1800.John Madison died in Botetourt Co., VA in 1784.

From all of the above information, I would say that John Madison, first Clerk of Augusta Co., VA was born in the early 1720s.I do not think he was born as early at 1700.I do not think that he was the John Madison of Drysdale Parish, King & Queen Co., VA who sold 1000 acres to his "niece", Elizabeth Madison, "eldest daugher of my brother, Ambrose Madison", in Spotsylvania Co., VA, on 4 Nov. 1734.

There seems to be some controversy as to whether John Madison, first Clerk of Augusta Co., VA, was married prior to marrying Agatha Strother. Some people believe that he was previously married to an Isabella, daughter of John Madison and Isabella (Minor Todd?).I would like to see the documentation which leads to this conclusion.Until I do, I tend to doubt this allegation.Whether the John Madison "of Drysdale Parish, King & Queen County", VA, involved in the 1734 deed in Spotsylvania Co., VA, mentioned above may have married an Isabella is an open question.I would like to see the record to show that any John Madison was married to an Isabella after John Madison and Isabella (Minor Todd?).

On 20 Jan. 1705/06 John Madison and Isabella "of St. Stephens Parish, King & Queen County", VA, deeded 300 acres in King William Co., VA, on Herring Creek to George Purchase.Isabella gave a power of attorney to Henry Madison of King William Co., VA to acknowledge her signature. This power of attorney was witnessed by "John Madison, Jr."Who is this John Madison, Jr.?He is not the alleged John Madison, brother to Ambrose Madison who was born circa 1700.He also was not John Madison, first Clerk of Augusta Co., VA.

We know that John Mad(d)ison, II, was born about 1655-1660.There is almost universal acceptance of the fact that the John Madison who was involved in the 1706 deed with a wife, Isabella, mentioned above, was this same John Mad(d)ison, II.In the ordinary course of events in the 17th century in VA, this John Mad(d)ison would have married about 1680 and would have named his first or second son "John".Could this "John Madison, Jr.", witness to Isabella's signature on the power of attorney in 1706, have been the son of this John Mad(d)ison, II?Could this "John Madison, Jr." also have married an Isabella? If so, could this "John Madison, Jr." be the person who married Isabella (Minor Todd?) and parented Ambrose Madison (and his established siblings who were born about 1700 and after)?
