brief biography

John Marr 1665 had a first wife who some think was a Catherine Fishback who would have been a sister or relative of his second wife Elizabeth Fishback.

The "Genealogies of Virginia Families" Volume II, Gi-Pe had a lengthy biography of John Marr. John Marr's origin doesn't really seem to be known, but it is believed he was a French Huguenot. The biography states that it is not known if John came directly from France or via England. He is believed to have been here about 1688 and that he was married in Virginia. "By 1695 he was established in Lancaster Co and is among the tithables there. He was also there in 1696. By 1700 he was in Stafford Co. and in the county levy received 600 pounds of tobacco for trapping two wolves. Linda Hi All, I'm back from a long sabbatical creating a new nonprofit agency. I've been going through my backlog of emails and want to contribute some possible answers to previous questions. Last summer inquiries were made about the family of John Marr. I descend from him and have spent 6 years trying to piece together his family. I hesitate to share my speculations about John Marr's descendants with the full list as they are highly speculative and unproven at this point. John Marr's origins are unknown. In 1997 John Gott showed me an unpublished manuscript he had written about the family. He said the Virginia Marr's claimed Scottish origin. Warren Marr, descendant of John Quincey Marr and his mistress Eliza Nickens, wrote an unpublished manuscript in 1967. He too believed that he descended from the House of Mar of Scotland. He wrote: "House of Mar is the title applied to that group of people in Scotland who were subjects of the Earl of Mar. Under the title, there were four primary families, ranked in the following order: Marr, Morren, Strachan and Tough. "In the days of the Roman Legions, Gaius Marius conquered the tribes of Germany. As a person he was so respected by the Germans that they took part of his name, 'mar', into the language to mean 'illustrious.'" [He sites no sources] At the end of the 19th C. a group of Marr descendants attemptedunsuccessfully to claim the estate of the late Earl of Mar of Scotland. It was found that they had no connection to the estate as the title had fallen to the House of Erskine (John Erskine, the 11th Earl of Mar born 1675). There are many Marr families who came to America. Some came from Scotland. None of these have been found to be directly connected to John Marr of Stafford Co. Yet another source: From the book, The Bradfords of Va, 1932, by Mrs. Nelle Rhea White, Whittet & Shepperson, Richmond, Va, Chapt. vii "Record of the Marr Family of Virginia "John Marr Sr. was imported from Great Britain and Ireland, 1735. (Orange County Records)" [source not sited] another: from "John Marr of Stafford County" Genealogies of Virginia families; Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine "In an effort to get background for John Marr, various books were consulted. Reitsap's 'Planches de l'Armorial General,' vol. 2, suppliment p. 161, describes the coats of arms of several families by the name of Marr, Marre and de la Marre. The Marr family is said to be of Ratisbonne (Regensburg) Bavaria, but since this book deals with French armorial families, the Ratisbonne Marrs must have originated in france. A Marre family is given as of Flanders and de la Marre as of Ile de france, Brittany, Larraine and Champaign. Since the Huguenots were strong in Brittany and Flanders it would seem likely that the Marr's and the de la Marre's found in English Huguenot Church records were from these provinces that lie so near England. Among the settlers of 'Manakin Town' in Virginia was a Nicti Mar with his wife and two children." another:RECORDS RELATING TO THE HUGUENOT EMIGRATION TO VIRGINIA IN 1700.3 LIST OF ALL YE PASSINGERS FROM LONDON TO JAMES RIVER, IN VIRGINIA, BEING FFRENCH REFUGEES IMBARQUED IN THE SHIP YE PETER AND ANTHONY, GALLEY OF LONDON, DANIEL PERREAU COMMANDER (VIZ'T):Nicholas Mare, sa femme and 2 enfans - 4 LISTE DES PERSONNES DU SECOND CONVOY QUI SERENT TOUTE L'ANNEE A MANICANTON. His ancestry on the Marr side was French, the original name being de la Mar; and on the maternal side was Scotch and English. I'm currently following the French idea because of the following deed "On 8 April 1702, William Allen of Stafford County, cordwainer (i.e., shoemaker), for 2500 pounds of tobacco sold to John Hooper of Northumberland County, all that tract or messuage of land lying westerly 'and adjoining the 100 acres I leased to John Marr a frenchman of this county and northerly on a certain tract sold by my brother John Allen to Lewis Renoe, a frenchman of Westmoreland County, and part of the land my brother John and I bought of Augustine Kneaton, Blacksmith.'" Because of the believed family connections between the Marr's and Allen's I think the French connection is the most likely. Cindy Crigler

There is another connection in that it is believed that Henry >Holtzclaw, second son in the family, married Nancy Harden. Now some >members of the Harden family went to southwest Pennsylvania.
