John Marr 1665 had a first wife who some think was a Catherine Fishback who would have been a sister or relative of his second wife Elizabeth Fishback.

The "Genealogies of Virginia Families" Volume II, Gi-Pe had a lengthy biography of John Marr.John Marr's origin doesn't really seem to be known, but it is believed he was a French Huguenot.The biography states that it is not known if John came directly from France or via England. He is believed to have been here about 1688 and that he was married in Virginia. "By 1695 he was established in Lancaster Co and is among the tithables there. He was also there in 1696. By 1700 he was in Stafford Co. and in the county levy received 600 pounds of tobacco for trapping two wolves. On April 8, 1702, William Allen of Stafford Co., cordwainer, (i.e. shoemaker), for 2500 pounds of tobacco sold to John Hooper of Northumberland Co.,all that tract or messuage of land lying westerly "and adjoining the 100 acres I leased to John Marr a frenchman of this county and northerly on a certain tract sold by my brother John Allen ..............."

I've been going through my backlog of emails and want to contribute some possible answers to previous questions.Last summer inquiries were made about the family of John Marr. I descend from him and have spent 6 years trying to piece together his family. I hesitate to share my speculations about John Marr's descendants with the full list as they are highly speculative and unproven at this point. John Marr's origins are unknown.In 1997 John Gott showed me an unpublished manuscript he had written about the family. He said the Virginia Marr's claimed Scottish origin. Warren Marr, descendant of John Quincey Marr and his mistress Eliza Nickens, wrote an unpublished manuscript in 1967. He too believed that he descended from the House of Mar of Scotland. He wrote:"House of Mar is the title applied to that group of people in Scotland who were subjects of the Earl of Mar. A Marre family is given as of Flanders and de la Marre as of Ile de france, Brittany, Larraine and Champaign. Since the Huguenots were strong in Brittany and Flanders it would seem likely that the Marr's and the de la Marre's found in English Huguenot Church records were from these provinces that lie so near England.
