A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA (SOLDIER). DAR Ancestor # A075950

Pvt. John Maxwell was born on May 9, 1763 in Virginia, died October 5, 1840 and is buried in the Maxwell Cemetery in Alpharetta, GA.

He served in the American Revolutionary War as a Private at age 14 from Elbert County, GA. His father, Thomas Maxwell also served. Elbert County at this time was part of the Cherokee Indian territory.

After the Revolutionary War, John married Agnes Henry, a daughter of William Henry. Their children were: Simeon Maxwell (1793-1865), Reuben Maxwell (1795-1861), Nancy Maxwell Camp (1797-1881), Benson Maxwell (1799-1875), Mary Maxwell Teasley (1803-1851) and William Pemberton Maxwell (1810-1885).

The Sons of the American Revolution, Piedmont Chapter, originally marked the grave on August 10, 1996. After the original marker was stolen, the grave marker was rededicated on April 12, 2003.

After the Revolutionary War, John married Agnes Henry, a daughter of William Henry. They had nine chldren: Simon, Ruben, Nancy, Benson, Clara, Mary, Elizabeth, William Pennington and Ann. Their descendants--Ruckers, Hembrees, Turners and others--had a profound influence on this area.

At the rededication ceremony, Aubrey Morris was Master of Ceremonies and the proclamation given by Georgia Senator Chuck Martin in the absence of the Mayor. Hon.
