John served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Together with his brother, William, John enlisted November 15, 1861 at Camp Calvert, Jacksboro, Campbell County as a Corporal in Company H, 2d Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was captured at Rogersville, Tennessee on November 6, 1863 and confined at Richmond November 13, 1863. He was sent to Andersonville Prison, Georgia February 18, 1864 and died there of pneumonia and diarrhea on June 6, 1864.
