William served in the Union Army during the Civil War. William enlisted December 31, 1861, age 20, at Camp Calvert, Jacksboro, Campbell County as a Corporal in Company H, 2d Tennessee Infantry Regiment. William was promoted to Sergeant by order of the regimental commander, Colonel James Carter. He was captured at Rogersville, Tennessee on November 6, 1863 and and transferred to Andersonville Prison, Georgia. There he was admitted to the hospital on June 14, 1864 and died of chronic diarrhea or scurvy on June 16, 1864.
