About Private John Mitchell, I

JOHN b, 20 Jun 1738 at North Yarmouth, ME (bapt. 27 Jul 1738); d. at Unity, ME 10 Mar 1830 in “93rd year” [g.s. Pond Cemetery] Unity; m. (int. 23 Oct 1761 at Falmouth, ME Mary (Vickery) Weston, widow of Edmund Weston, daughter of David and Hannah (Parker) Vickery, b. c1738; d. 15 Feb 1822 at Unity, ae 83 [g.s. Pond Cem.]. John and his family removed to Machias in 1765, were in Colubmia in 1769. John took part in the battle of the Margaretta and the Unity. John Mitchell was a Private, Capt. Stephen Smith’s Company; he enlisted 23 Sep 1775 and was discharged 31 Dec 1775; stationed at Machias, Lincoln Co. for defense of the seacoast. The names of those who participated in the capture of the British ships were kept quiet in fear of retaliation by the English. Had any of the Machias men been captured, they could have suffered the death penalty without trial, not even Court Martial. Many of the participants left the area for interior Maine. Presumably, John and his family left Machias sometime after 1766 or 1777. By 1782, he and his family were living at 25 Mile Pond Town (later Unity), possibly the second settler in that town. He built the first mill in Unity in 1782. The Rev. Paul Coffin says in his Missionary Tour in Maine, 1797, Vol. 4, p. 351 “visited John Mitchell, a steady man………..He has one hundred acres of land cleared and raised one hundred and twenty bushels of corn……..He is now worried about a title to his land; as it was claimed by the Plymouth Company.”

John Mitchell was a Private in Capt. Stephen Smith's Company, stationed in Machias for the defense of the seacoast during the Revolutionary War. He participated in the battle of the Margaretta and the Unity.

He and his family settled in 25 Mile Pond Town (later Unity) by 1782.
