Notes

  • Had 150 acre tobacco farm at Shrewsbury, MD.
  • John Musgrave Sr. in turn was a son of Cuthbert Musgrave/Musgrove, a mariner from Crooksdale, England who became a tobacco farmer in Charles County, MD.
  • Cuthbert was a son of William Musgrave of Crooksdale, England where records exist that he apprenticed Cuthbert to become a mariner.  Cuthbert's wife was named Dorothy as was apparently his mother.
  • Cuthbert Musgrave/Musgrove apparently died intestate and his son John Sr. inherited his property and willed it to his oldest son Edward, who sold it.  John Jr inherited land in Virginia and also half of wild horses breeding stock, which he took to South Carolina.
  • John Musgrove, Sr. appeared in 1701 on a Militia List in Staufford Co., VA and later purchased land there. As new counties were formed his same land was later located in Prince William County, then later again, in Fairfax Co., VA. The land was mentioned in his will.
  • Both Edward and John were the two oldest sons of John Musgrove, Sr., who left a will in Fairfax Co., VA. Two younger sons were William and Cuthbert. I have a good deal on William's line as well but can find nothing else on Cuthbert.[1]
  • The father of John Musgrove, Sr. appears to have been emigrant Cuthbert Musgrove and his wife, Dorothy. He did not leave a will and according to the laws of primogenture the elderst son inherited all the real estate. John Musgrove, Sr. was apparently the oldest son if not the only son.[1]
  • John Musgrove, Sr. appeared in 1701 on a Militia List in Staufford Co., VA and later purchased land there. As new counties were formed his same land was later located in Prince William County, then later again, in Fairfax Co., VA. The land was mentioned in his will.[1]
  • Son, William was later in Loudon Co., VA, and died around the time of the Rev. War. Left no will but his estate records named a wife, Volinda and his children. Sons, John, Gilbert and Cuthbert A. Musgrove. [1]
