His father was born in Scotland. John booked passage from the Port of London on the ship, Elizabeth, in route to Virginia, November 21, 1774. He came [from Scotland] to America as an indentured servant and stated his occupation "at the time" as a hair dresser. He was granted one hundred acres of land by Denny Fairfax on November 19, 1791 in Fauquier County, Va. John sold this land to Thomas O. Bannon for "fifty pounds" on November 17, 1801.
John married Leonora Hitt, a native of Fauquier County, Va. and of German descent.
John and his family were among the first settlers of what is now Barbour County, settling on Taylor's Drain, north of Philippi, where John was a miller.
