John Ishom Puckett was born in Dorcester, Oxford, England, but immigrated to Virginia as a young, single man in 1637. He was the first of the Puckett line in Virginia.
John Ishom Puckett was born in the year 1616, in Dorcester, Oxford, England. He was the son of Henry Puckett and Ann Nin Puckett of Dorcester.
John's parents lived and died in England, so we can probably assume that John came to Virginia on his own, as a single man. Some genealogical accounts state that the first mention of John is when he bought property in 1665 in Virginia, but it appears he came much earlier than that.
John came to Virginia in 1637 as a headright of John Groves, Elizabeth City County.
MARRIAGE
John married Anne Jeffreys, also an English immigrant in 1649, in Henrico County, Virginia. He was 33 at the time of his marriage; Anne was 21.
Anne was born in 1628 in Dorchester, England. She was the daughter of William Jeffreys and Mary Gould Jeffreys, originally of Sussex and Hertfordshire, England, who had also immigrated to Henrico County, Virginia.
FAMILY
John and Anne had a family of eight children, all born in Henrico County, Virginia. There were five sons and three daughters. The children were: Richard (1652-1716), John, Jr (1654- ), Joseph (1655-1723), Martha (1657- ), Mary Elizabeth (1657-1692), Thomas Puckett (1658-1716), and Ruth (1659-1660).
LAND GRANT
John Puckett was issued a grant for 500 acres in Henrico County, Virginia, dated January 27. 1665, granted for "transportation of 10 persons".
DEATH
John died on August 1, 1677 at his home in Henrico County, Virginia. He was 61 years old.
Anne, too, would die just two years later, on May 29, 1679, in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, Virginia. She was 51 years old at the time of her death.
JOHN and ANNE'S ESTATE
The estate was divided among the children. By June 2, 1679 we know that both John and Anne are dead by an agreement acknowledged in the county between their children, William Puckett, John Puckett, Thomas Puckett and Richard Womack, husband of daughter Mary Puckett, for the division of cattle and hogs of the estate of John Puckett and Anne, his wife. The will of John Puckett seems to have been lost hence some legal agreement was necessary.
