About John Carl Richberg

Biography

John Carl Richberg, lawyer, was born in Romrod, Germany, a son of Louis and Kathanna (Mesz) Richberg. He was educated in Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, and in the United States Naval Academy (LL.D. Knox College, 1909). He practiced law at Chicago many years, until retiring from practice three years before his death which occurred in 1918. He was a member of the Board of Education, Chicago, for three terms, president two terms, 1874-76 and 1879-81. His administration was notable for placing the salaries of women teachers on a par with those of men; and eliminating bible reading in the schools. He was president of the Illinois Commission on Uniform State Laws; member of the Board of Visitors to United States Naval Academy, 1896, member of Grand Army of the Republic, and commander of Farragut Naval Veterans' Association.
