About John Ryves
Heir to his grandfather and grandmother was 20 years of age on 24 June 1556 and had a fortune of 20,000 pounds/year, a enormous sum for the time and a considerable part of which was laid out in Dorset. He was the first in the family to matriculate at Oxford University where he entered Crpus Christi College in 1547, obtaining a BA in 1551 and was made a fellow in 1554. He received the degree of MA in 1555. He then passed the Middle Temple of the Inns of Court for the study of law (admitted in January 1555).
In 1560 he purchased the manor of Compton from the Queen (previously belonging to the monastery of Miton for 450 pounds.
