About Edward Mann

Biography

Edward was the son of John Mann and his wife Amey Ryves. Although he was the fifth son, he appears to have inherited the majority of his father's estate with his older stepbrothers William, John and Thomas, receiving little or nothing and his older brother Bartholomew receiving a smaller bequest and only on condition that he gave up a previous claim to money from their mothers estate.

Career

Like his father, he was a merchant and was active in local affairs in Poole becoming a Freeman in 1585 and Mayor in 1589. He was MP for the town in 1589, 1593 and 1604 and held a number of positions within Dorset and became a member of Merchant's asscociations including the Spanish company in 1604 and the French company in 1611

"Edward Man of Poole in Dorset son of John Man claimed the freedom by virtue of a clause in the charter of 1577, 'because his father was an auncient trader into Spaine before Anno 1568 and was lyving when the said charter was graunted, the same being testified in open court'. Also .... They were both admitted, paying 6s. 8d. each and taking their oaths as freemen by ancient trade" Death and Will Edward wrote his will on 15th September 1622 'being Sicke but of pefect memory' He made bequests of 20s to the church in Poole and 20s to the poor of Poole. 10s to Mr Nicholas Jefferys preacher of gods worde in poole ... to preach at my buryall. 20s to each of three Overseers my cosen Mr Richard Swayne of Blanford esquire, my cozen Mr Anthonny Weekes of Salisbury Esquier, my cosen Mt Richard Rives of Christ(?) oxford gent and my brother in lawe Mr Lewes Pope of Taunton, Merchant The rest of his estate was left to his wife Elinor who was also executrix. He appointed other relatives as executors Other members of the extended family were also witnesses John Ryves Thomas Salman John Ryves, Ro. Ryves The signature on the will was Edward Mann (though the scribe copying the will used a single n)

The will was proved on 24 January 1623 Unfortunately the Poole parish register for this date is very damaged and most of the entries lost. However a memorial brass records his death.

Note on Marriage

Samuel Hambleton's book records dates of baptisms, marriages and deaths transcribed from what is suggested is an original document in the family. It differs from the History of Parliament account in the name of Edward's wives. History of Parliament says that his second wife was a sister of Lewis Pope MP from Taunton. Edward's will does indeed refer to his brother in lawe, Lewis Pope but this could refer to one of his siblings husbands (further research is needed)

There is a wealth of information on John Man and his family in the book cited below, including names of godparents for children, locations of baptism, etc.
